MEDI11004 - Professional Practice

General Information

Unit Synopsis

Students learn to interact effectively with clients and peers through an understanding of professional and interprofessional relationships. This unit provides an overview of the social, legal and ethical issues that impact on the experience of illness, equity of health care and best practice. It contextualises therapeutic communication and collaborative teamwork skills and introduces the student to evidence based practice, reflective practice and decision making in the health professions.

Important note: Students enrolled in a subsequent unit who failed their pre-requisite unit, should drop the subsequent unit before the census date or within 10 working days of Fail grade notification. Students who do not drop the unit in this timeframe cannot later drop the unit without academic and financial liability. Attendance Requirements

All on-campus students are expected to attend scheduled classes – in some units, these classes are identified as a mandatory (pass/fail) component and attendance is compulsory. International students, on a student visa, must maintain a full time study load and meet both attendance and academic progress requirements in each study period (satisfactory attendance for International students is defined as maintaining at least an 80% attendance record).

Recommended Student Time Commitment

Each 6-credit Undergraduate unit at CQUniversity requires an overall time commitment of an average of 12.5 hours of study per week, making a total of 150 hours for the unit.

This is a graded unit: your overall grade will be calculated from the marks or grades for each assessment task, based on the relative weightings shown in the table above. You must obtain an overall mark for the unit of at least 50%, or an overall grade of ‘pass’ in order to pass the unit. If any ‘pass/fail’ tasks are shown in the table above they must also be completed successfully (‘pass’ grade). You must also meet any minimum mark requirements specified for a particular assessment task, as detailed in the ‘assessment task’ section (note that in some instances, the minimum mark for a task may be greater than 50%).

Feedback
There was a large number of assessment elements.
Recommendation
Review the assessment strategy for relevance and also manageability for students and staff.

Feedback
Student expectations were not aligned with the number of lecture videos and visibility of the unit coordinator (UC). Most learning resources were not recorded lectures. Tutorials were not conducted by the UC. These factors may have contributed to students feeling a lack of connection with the unit coordinator.
Recommendation
Consider opportunities that could support student connection with the unit coordinator while also considering methods to support realistic student expectations about team teaching and variety of learning resources.

Feedback
Some students didn't recognise that the groupwork was a part of learning, not just an assessment activity.
Recommendation
Look for opportunities to place more focus on what students have learnt from participating in the groupwork, rather than what they produced from the groupwork.

Feedback
Some students commented that they had already covering some topics in other Year 1 units. The unit learning outcomes and content have been in place for several years. Changing external influences such as professional body competencies, capabilities and accreditation standards have been changing during this time.
Recommendation
Consult with the Heads of Courses across Sonography, Echocardiography and Medical Imaging to complete a needs analysis for unit outcomes and topics.

On successful completion of this unit, you will be able to:

  1. Collaborate with health care students demonstrating an understanding of professional and interprofessional relationships.
  2. Describe the principles underlying effective communication skills in health care settings demonstrating cultural sensitivity.
  3. Reflect on experiences to enhance your own personal and professional development.
  4. Apply knowledge of evidence-based practice to gather information effectively.
  5. Apply knowledge of legal and ethical issues that impact the provision of health care and best practice.
  6. Describe the impact of social determinants, disability and culture on the experience of illness and access to health care for Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians.
  7. Identify national and international health reform initiatives to improve the quality and equity of health care.
  8. Explain the concept of quality patient care and inclusive decision-making in the health professions.

This is a core unit for many of the allied health courses which are subject to external accreditation by a range of professional and regulatory bodies. It introduces a range of concepts and professional competencies at a foundational level.
