MEDI12003 - Imaging Procedures 1

General Information

Unit Synopsis

On completion of this course, students should be able to practice the radiographic and clinical skills and knowledge required to perform routine radiographic images of the skeleton, including articulations and basic skull radiography. Basic chest and abdominal examinations will be included and gastro intestinal studies will be introduced. High levels of patient care and safety will be integrated into good radiographic practice. Analyse radiographs for their accuracy and quality of the image. All material learnt in this course is reinforced in practical laboratory setting. A digital radiological laboratory and imaging workstations will allow for hands on, practical and simulated experiential learning.

Pre-requisites or Co-requisites All year 1 courses from the Bachelor of Medical Imaging program are to be successfully completed. And Corequisite: MEDI12002 Science and Instrumentation 1

Students who do not drop the unit in this timeframe cannot later drop the unit without academic and financial liability. Attendance Requirements

All on-campus students are expected to attend scheduled classes – in some units, these classes are identified as a mandatory (pass/fail) component and attendance is compulsory. International students, on a student visa, must maintain a full time study load and meet both attendance and academic progress requirements in each study period (satisfactory attendance for International students is defined as maintaining at least an 80% attendance record).

Each 6-credit Undergraduate unit at CQUniversity requires an overall time commitment of an average of 12.5 hours of study per week, making a total of 150 hours for the unit.

This is a graded unit: your overall grade will be calculated from the marks or grades for each assessment task, based on the relative weightings shown in the table above. You must obtain an overall mark for the unit of at least 50%, or an overall grade of ‘pass’ in order to pass the unit. If any ‘pass/fail’ tasks are shown in the table above they must also be completed successfully (‘pass’ grade). You must also meet any minimum mark requirements specified for a particular assessment task, as detailed in the ‘assessment task’ section (note that in some instances, the minimum mark for a task may be greater than 50%).

Feedback, Recommendations and Responses

Every unit is reviewed for enhancement each year. At the most recent review, the following staff and student feedback items were identified and recommendations were made.

Feedback
Some students found the in-class test difficult and felt that not enough time was allocated for this assessment task.
Recommendation
Review the structure and volume of the in-class test relative to the test duration.
Action Taken
The in-class test was reviewed by a second academic to ensure it was an appropriate length and that the questions all related to the learning outcomes being assessed.

Feedback
There are many assessment tasks included in this unit. This makes it time consuming for the academics and may inhibit deeper learning for students
Recommendation
Review the assessment strategy for this unit to manage assessment time demands on students and staff while ensuring that all learning outcomes are assessed.
Action Taken
A unit update proposal was approved to reduce the number of theory tests and to reduce the number of submissions for an assessment related to application of knowledge.

Feedback
In many weekly labs, particularly the first instructed lab of the week, there was insufficient time to achieve the lab lesson plan.
Recommendation
Investigate methods of increasing supervised imaging lab times for this unit which has an increasing number of students.
Action Taken
Instructed imaging lab sessions were lengthened by 30 minutes. The timing of the labs were adjusted such that each student group had a 1.5 hour instructed lab, immediately followed by a 1.5 hour unsupervised practice lab session.

Feedback
Although the academic team considers the image critique portfolio as an effective learning and assessment tool, some students commented that the image critique portfolio was very time consuming.
Recommendation
Explicitly emphasise to the students about the role of the image critique portfolio and the weekly engagement required to complete the task.

Feedback
A minority of students commented that they would like more resources focusing on image interpretation and image anatomy.
Recommendation
Investigate resources to fit both outgoing Imaging Procedures 1 in 2024 and new Radiographic Anatomy and Appearances units in 2025.

Unit learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, you will be able to:

  1. Perform routine examinations of skeleton, including upper and lower extremities, pelvic and shoulder girdles vertebral column, ribs, sternum and basic views of skull
  2. Perform routine examinations to demonstrate respiratory, urinary and gastro intestinal systems
  3. Perform all examinations in a safe manner, applying radiation protection where required
  4. Apply safe practice principles to the use of all radiation emitting equipment
  5. Treat patient with respect and with care
  6. Analyze radiographs of these areas to determine accuracy, quality of anatomical part identified
  7. Effectively apply analytical criteria to the use and effectiveness of various imaging technologies
