MEDI12004 - Medical Imaging Clinical Course 1

General Information

Unit Synopsis

During this clinical unit you will apply the knowledge and skills previously learned to the clinical environment. Placed within radiology departments or clinics, you will work beside clinical radiographers to provide imaging services in a professional and effective manner. Performance assessments will focus on imaging procedures previously learned in the academic environment. You will use your knowledge of image evaluation to critique your images and suggest methods for improvement. Reflective practice will assist you in developing your skills and professional behaviour throughout this unit.

Must be enrolled in Year 2 of Bachelor of Medical Imaging Course


BIOH12008 Human Pathophysiology or MPAT12001 Medical Pathophysiology; and

MEDI12001 Radiation Science; and

MEDI12002 Science and Instrumentation 1; and

MEDI12003 Imaging Procedures 1. If this unit has been successfully completed, it must have been completed within the last 12 months. Should this time limit have elapsed, the student must successfully complete a skills assessment or a period of skills revision as determined by the discipline lead.

Important note: Students enrolled in a subsequent unit who failed their pre-requisite unit, should drop the subsequent unit before the census date or within 10 working days of Fail grade notification. Students who do not drop the unit in this timeframe cannot later drop the unit without academic and financial liability. Attendance Requirements

All on-campus students are expected to attend scheduled classes – in some units, these classes are identified as a mandatory (pass/fail) component and attendance is compulsory. International students, on a student visa, must maintain a full time study load and meet both attendance and academic progress requirements in each study period (satisfactory attendance for International students is defined as maintaining at least an 80% attendance record).

Term 3 - 2020 : The overall satisfaction for students in the last offering of this course was 4.3 (on a 5 point Likert scale), based on a 8.7% response rate.

Feedback, Recommendations and Responses

Every unit is reviewed for enhancement each year. At the most recent review, the following staff and student feedback items were identified and recommendations were made.

The compulsory pre-clinical session was beneficial in supporting the students' preparations for their first clinical placement.
Continue with the provision of a pre-clinical session to prepare the students for their first clinical placement.
Action Taken
Due to Covid-19 restrictions, it was not possible to conduct an on-campus session. A presentation video was posted to the Moodle site covering the advice from the pre-clinical session.

The debriefing session on the first day of the students' return to campus allowed students to share and reflect on their first clinical experience.
Maintain the use of debriefing after the clinical placement block for students to share their clinical experiences.
Action Taken
Due to the changed timing of the placement in 2020, there was a much larger time gap between placement end and return to campus for most students. This impacted the benefit of the debriefing process. No formal de-brifing activity was scheduled, but students have spoken with unit coordinators of their Year 3 units regarding their clinical experiences.

Only 26 of the 46 students watched the pre-clinical recorded information. This left 20 students without the preparation and support of the pre-clinical session, which previously has been found to be beneficial.
Return to face to face pre-clinical information sessions so that all students engage with the preparation and support prior to going out on their first clinical placement.

  5. Perform all examinations of the appendicular skeleton,thorax, abdomen and pelvis accurately, safely and effectively.
