MEDI12006 - Imaging Procedures 2

General Information

Unit Synopsis

Using radiographic skills and knowledge already taught and practiced, students should display skills in the performance of additional and advanced examination of the skeleton, and an analytical understanding of the role and technique for conventional contrast studies. The student will learn skills needed to care for and radiograph paediatric, geriatric and acutely ill patients. Functioning in the operating theatre, Intensive Care Unit and emergency departments will also be covered. Students will critically analyse resultant radiographs and suggest methods to additional radiographs. Students will apply their knowledge of radiation and patient safety to all procedures. Students will evaluate literature to develop knowledge and understanding of evidence based practice. All material learnt in this course is reinforced in practical laboratory setting. A digital radiological laboratory and imaging workstations will allow for hands on, practical and simulated experiential learning.

Attendance Requirements

All on-campus students are expected to attend scheduled classes – in some units, these classes are identified as a mandatory (pass/fail) component and attendance is compulsory. International students, on a student visa, must maintain a full time study load and meet both attendance and academic progress requirements in each study period (satisfactory attendance for International students is defined as maintaining at least an 80% attendance record).

Each 6-credit Undergraduate unit at CQUniversity requires an overall time commitment of an average of 12.5 hours of study per week, making a total of 150 hours for the unit.

This is a graded unit: your overall grade will be calculated from the marks or grades for each assessment task, based on the relative weightings shown in the table above. You must obtain an overall mark for the unit of at least 50%, or an overall grade of ‘pass’ in order to pass the unit. If any ‘pass/fail’ tasks are shown in the table above they must also be completed successfully (‘pass’ grade). You must also meet any minimum mark requirements specified for a particular assessment task, as detailed in the ‘assessment task’ section (note that in some instances, the minimum mark for a task may be greater than 50%).

In 2021 the summative assessment of radiographic skills and imaging theory was expanded to include both radiographic examinations newly learned in this unit and those learned in the prerequisite unit. Testing both supports currency of knowledge and skill in the full range of examinations that students will be expected to perform in their Term 3 clinical placement.
Recommendation
Continue to assess previous Imaging Procedures unit content to facilitate clinical placement readiness.

Feedback
The new learning activity and assessment task of the image assessment portfolio used the virtual reality (VR) radiography learning system. This self-paced student learning activity was effective for supporting image assessment skill development.
Recommendation
Investigate further structured learning activities that focus on image evaluation using the VR system (in addition to the image evaluation and portfolio assessment) to facilitate clinical placement readiness.
Action Taken
Students were encouraged to use the immersive VR for independent image taking activities. Weekly tutorials had a greater focus on image evaluation skill development.

The Image Portfolio and Evaluation assessment task grading strategy does not discriminate students' varying abilities to evaluate images for technical sufficiency.

Unit learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, you will be able to:

  1. Critically analyse and perform simulated alternative/adapted techniques of the musculoskeletal system including upper and lower extremities, shoulder and pelvic girdle, spine, facial bones and skull commonly requested in the clinical setting.
  2. Identify and analyse the role of conventional constrast media studies, specifically, urinary, biliary and gastro intestinal studies and special studies of the nervous system.
  3. Analyse the role of pharmacological properties of contrast media and other drugs used in diagnostic imaging.
  4. Analyse effective communication for patients undergoing these examinations.
  5. Evaluate safe practice to include appropriate radiation safety procedures for radiography in all areas including the accident and emergency, operating theatre and mobile setting.
  6. Critically analyse resultant radiographs and suggest methods to improve the image quality or the need for additional radiographs.
  7. Analyse the humanistic and scientific principles of diagnostic imaging used for imaging of alternative/adapted musculoskeletal and contrast media studies.
  8. Evaluate imaging protocols/pathways for contrast media studies using evidence based practice.
