General Information

Unit Synopsis

This unit will expand on your prior study of x-ray equipment and imaging processes with particular focus on specialised imaging modalities. The primary focus of the unit is on the technical fundamentals (both theoretical and practical) of Computed Tomography to enable safe and effective scan technique. You will be introduced to the physical and operational principles of advanced medical imaging modalities including angiography, magnetic resonance imaging, ultrasound imaging, bone mineral densitometry and nuclear medicine imaging.

Students who do not drop the unit in this timeframe cannot later drop the unit without academic and financial liability. Attendance Requirements

All on-campus students are expected to attend scheduled classes – in some units, these classes are identified as a mandatory (pass/fail) component and attendance is compulsory. International students, on a student visa, must maintain a full time study load and meet both attendance and academic progress requirements in each study period (satisfactory attendance for International students is defined as maintaining at least an 80% attendance record).

Each 6-credit Undergraduate unit at CQUniversity requires an overall time commitment of an average of 12.5 hours of study per week, making a total of 150 hours for the unit.

This is a graded unit: your overall grade will be calculated from the marks or grades for each assessment task, based on the relative weightings shown in the table above. You must obtain an overall mark for the unit of at least 50%, or an overall grade of ‘pass’ in order to pass the unit. If any ‘pass/fail’ tasks are shown in the table above they must also be completed successfully (‘pass’ grade). You must also meet any minimum mark requirements specified for a particular assessment task, as detailed in the ‘assessment task’ section (note that in some instances, the minimum mark for a task may be greater than 50%).

Term 1 - 2020 : The overall satisfaction for students in the last offering of this course was 4.3 (on a 5 point Likert scale), based on a 44.44% response rate.

Feedback, Recommendations and Responses

Every unit is reviewed for enhancement each year. At the most recent review, the following staff and student feedback items were identified and recommendations were made.

Students appreciated the method of delivery (recorded lectures) and the 5-minute Moodle videos used to explain complex concepts in other ways
Maintain method of delivery and encourage students to ask questions so that relevant 5-minute Moodle videos can be developed.
Action Taken
The delivery of the unit material via the recorded lectures was maintained and proved invaluable for the students' on-line learning.

Several of the labs directly helped with understanding of the content, but other labs sessions were not as relevant.
Review the lab activities to ensure relevance. Consider the number of labs needed in this unit.
Action Taken
The CT lab activities were re-designed to reflect relevant practical application of the theoretical CT knowledge. These activities were demonstrated via video recordings during the pandemic to maintain student engagement.

Students appreciated quick responses to questions and the coordinator's willingness to help wherever possible.
Maintain fast turnaround for questions and concerns. Continue to encourage students to ask for help when needed.

Efficient responses to students via unit Forums and emails were maintained to support student success while learning on-line.

Well-organised content of recorded lectures, tutorials and quizzes, were presented in a way that made the information easy to understand and further explore the content.
Continue with the use of the pre-recorded lectures, weekly formative quizzes and engaging tutorials to assess the students' understanding of the weekly material.

The creation of the recorded practical CT exercises equipped students with practical CT application whilst studying via distance.
Investigate the use of the recorded CT lab exercises as preparation for scheduled CT lab activities when on-campus teaching resumes.

Unit learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, you will be able to:

  1. Detail the processes of data acquisition, processing and image reconstruction in computed tomography.
  2. Operate computed tomography equipment safely and effectively, with consideration to patient dose, image quality and equipment conservation.
  3. Manipulate 3D data sets in computed tomography.
  4. Outline the issues of image transmission, storage and viewing in DICOM and PACS-integrated digital radiology environments.
  5. Discuss the design, operational features and clinical safety considerations of specialised applications such as angiography, bone mineral densitometry, ultrasonography and nuclear medicine imaging.
