MEDI13004 - Medical Imaging Clinical Placement 2

General Information

Unit Synopsis

During this work integrated learning placement you will further develop your skills in general radiography. Placed within radiology departments or clinics, you will work under the guidance and mentorship of clinical radiographers to perform radiography in a professional and effective manner and become a useful member of the imaging team. As this is your second block placement, your performance focus will be on general radiography examinations of non-complex patients with the goal of attaining advanced beginner level of skill. You will undergo performance assessments on radiography of a range of body regions. You will also be assessed on your professional behaviours and attributes. Reflective practice will assist you in developing your skills throughout this unit.

Pre-requisites or Co-requisites

Pre-requisites:

  • Enrolment in Year 2 of Bachelor of Medical Imaging Course
  • BIOH12008 Human Pathophysiology or MPAT12001 Medical Pathophysiology
  • MEDI12001 Radiation Science
  • MEDI12005 Science and Instrumentation 2
  • MEDI12003 Imaging Procedures 1
  • MEDI12006 Imaging Procedures 2. This unit must have been completed within the last 12 months. Should this time limit be exceeded, the student must complete skills assessments and undergo a period of skills revision as determined by the Head of Course.

Co-requisite:

  • MEDI12004 Medical Imaging Clinical Placement 1. The placement for this unit must have been completed immediately prior to the commencement of the MEDI13004 placement and at the same clinical facility. If the MEDI12004 was completed more than two months earlier and/or at another clinical facility, the student must complete an additional week of placement at the MEDI13004 facility.


Important note: Students enrolled in a subsequent unit who failed their pre-requisite unit, should drop the subsequent unit before the census date or within 10 working days of Fail grade notification. Students who do not drop the unit in this timeframe cannot later drop the unit without academic and financial liability. Attendance Requirements

All on-campus students are expected to attend scheduled classes – in some units, these classes are identified as a mandatory (pass/fail) component and attendance is compulsory. International students, on a student visa, must maintain a full time study load and meet both attendance and academic progress requirements in each study period (satisfactory attendance for International students is defined as maintaining at least an 80% attendance record).

Provide regular communication about assessment expectations and due dates to help students on clinical placement meet their academic requirements on time.
Recommendation
Maintain clear communication and reminders.

The unit coordinator and casual marker maintained regular and clear communication with students via email, feedback and forum postings.

Feedback
Students in the second placement block appeared to struggle more with adhering to requirements than those in the first placement block. This may be because these students have not had a significant break from study in two years.
Recommendation
The Medical Imaging teaching team will investigate opportunities to change the scheduling of this unit to allow a break for students.
Action Taken
A course update proposal has been approved which will assist in scheduling of the clinical placement units to allow breaks for students between their theory and clinical placement units.

Feedback
Some new imaging technologies are not represented in the log book and can only be logged as 'other' with comments.
Recommendation
The Medical Imaging teaching team are reviewing clinical log books to update them to include new and emerging technologies.

Some students were not completing the log books accurately and completely. Log books were returned to students for correction and completion.
Recommendation
Investigate methods beyond those used in the unit profile and Moodle site to advise students regarding log book requirements.
