MEDI13006 - Imaging Procedures 4

General Information

Unit Synopsis

This is the fourth and final Imaging Procedures unit in the course. There are two main areas of focus for the unit - adaptation radiography and fluoroscopic procedures. You will build on your knowledge and skills from prior theory units and clinical placements and further develop your problem-solving skills in the planning and execution of imaging procedures on complex patients and in complex environments such as theatre, casualty and wards. A range of fluoroscopic procedures will be discussed with respect to goals, technique, environments and the radiographer's role. You will examine the critical contribution of interpersonal skills such as effective communication and teamwork to the radiographer's ability to perform effectively and efficiently in these procedure areas.

Important note: Students enrolled in a subsequent unit who failed their pre-requisite unit, should drop the subsequent unit before the census date or within 10 working days of Fail grade notification. Students who do not drop the unit in this timeframe cannot later drop the unit without academic and financial liability. Attendance Requirements

All on-campus students are expected to attend scheduled classes – in some units, these classes are identified as a mandatory (pass/fail) component and attendance is compulsory. International students, on a student visa, must maintain a full time study load and meet both attendance and academic progress requirements in each study period (satisfactory attendance for International students is defined as maintaining at least an 80% attendance record).

Each 6-credit Undergraduate unit at CQUniversity requires an overall time commitment of an average of 12.5 hours of study per week, making a total of 150 hours for the unit.

This is a graded unit: your overall grade will be calculated from the marks or grades for each assessment task, based on the relative weightings shown in the table above. You must obtain an overall mark for the unit of at least 50%, or an overall grade of ‘pass’ in order to pass the unit. If any ‘pass/fail’ tasks are shown in the table above they must also be completed successfully (‘pass’ grade). You must also meet any minimum mark requirements specified for a particular assessment task, as detailed in the ‘assessment task’ section (note that in some instances, the minimum mark for a task may be greater than 50%).

Feedback, Recommendations and Responses

Every unit is reviewed for enhancement each year. At the most recent review, the following staff and student feedback items were identified and recommendations were made.

Feedback
Within lab times, demonstrate more methods of performing simulated mobile x-ray imaging techniques to better prepare students for these scenarios when on clinical placements.
Recommendation
Purchase x-ray cassette holders to use in the imaging practical labs that would be commonly used as imaging support devices within hospital and clinical x-ray departments to perform mobile x-rays. These devices will allow students to practice routinely-performed mobile x-ray examinations in the simulated lab environment that most closely relate to real mobile imaging, providing them with relevant practical skills to use during clinical placements.
Action Taken
The newly purchased 'rad-slides' were implemented into the lab activities and practical assessments, providing students with the most up-to-date devices to assist with applying the practical skills of complex and mobile x-ray imaging.

Feedback
Changing the structure of the graded practical assessment to a pass/fail assessment within a graded unit to better reflect a student's capabilities with complex imaging scenarios. Students historically perform this teamwork practical assessment to a very high standard, which is to be expected of students nearing the end of their 3rd year of medical imaging study.
Recommendation
Change the practical assessment of the unit to a pass/fail grade only within the graded unit. Assess individually demonstrated mobile imaging techniques and teamwork skills through performing complex imaging scenarios. These are skills required for the following clinical placements.
Action Taken
An additional practical assessment item was introduced focusing on routinely performed radiographic imaging using mobile x-ray equipment. This pass/fail assessment item will assist in preparing students for the clinical environment. The practical assessment on complex x-ray imaging scenarios and teamwork skills, remained as a graded assessment within the unit.

Feedback
Students displayed competence and preparedness for clinical placement in the assessed areas of complex scenarios, such as mobile and trauma x-ray imaging, but required more preparation in the adaptive techniques used in the imaging of ambulant and 'walking wounded' patients for routine x-rays.
Recommendation
To enhance student preparedness for clinical placement, investigate the potential of expanding the number and type of performance assessments to include solo performance adaptation of a radiographic examination for a simulated patient with some complexity in presentation.

Feedback
The graded complex scenario practical assessment involving teamwork skills was performed to an extremely high standard, which is to be expected of students nearing the end of their 3rd year of medical imaging study. As a graded assessment, this may have distorted students' overall grades.
Recommendation
Investigate changing the graded complex scenario practical assessment to a pass/fail assessment.
