MEDS12005 - Medical Sonography Clinical Course 1

General Information

Unit Synopsis

This course allows students to apply skills, knowledge and attributes learnt, in the clinical area. Abdominal superficial structures and male pelvis will be the primary studies practised. Behavioural aspects of professional practice are emphasised and students are encouraged to reflect on their own performance and to exhibit the highest level of safe patient care. Critical appraisal of performance will enable students' to develop their patient care, professional, technical and analytic skills in a work setting under supervision.

Important note: Students enrolled in a subsequent unit who failed their pre-requisite unit, should drop the subsequent unit before the census date or within 10 working days of Fail grade notification. Students who do not drop the unit in this timeframe cannot later drop the unit without academic and financial liability. Attendance Requirements

Unit learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, you will be able to:

  1. Demonstrate developing competency in performing the following diagnostic ultrasound examinations: abdomen, superficial structures and male pelvis.
  2. Interpret requests for sonographic examinations.
  3. Demonstrate appropriate patient care skills, professional behaviour and positive attitudes and behaviours.
  4. Distinguish between normal and abnormal appearances and critique images for diagnostic sufficiency and, if necessary, initiating corrective action.
  5. Communicate clearly and effectively.
  6. Solve problems critically and creatively using a variety of strategies.
  7. Self evaluate their problem solving skills.
  8. Manage the use of time and other resources to complete tasks and attain goals.
  9. Take responsibility for his/her own actions and use reflective practice for personal and professional development.
  10. Work effectively in teams and independently as appropriate.
  11. Resolve conflicts and adapt to new situations and demands.
  12. Write appropriate technical impressions/preliminary reports.
