MEDS20002 - Medical Sonography Clinical Practicum 1

General Information

Unit Synopsis

This graduate clinical course builds on the sonographic skills, knowledge and attitudes developed during the Bachelor of Medical Sonography. Students will perform pelvic, obstetric and vascular diagnostic scans and interpret findings to formulate a differential diagnosis. Students will engage with their clinical supervisors in a critical appraisal of their professional behavior.

Prerequisites:- NURS13117 and MEDS13006

Important note: Students enrolled in a subsequent unit who failed their pre-requisite unit, should drop the subsequent unit before the census date or within 10 working days of Fail grade notification. Students who do not drop the unit in this timeframe cannot later drop the unit without academic and financial liability. Attendance Requirements

All on-campus students are expected to attend scheduled classes – in some units, these classes are identified as a mandatory (pass/fail) component and attendance is compulsory. International students, on a student visa, must maintain a full time study load and meet both attendance and academic progress requirements in each study period (satisfactory attendance for International students is defined as maintaining at least an 80% attendance record).

Unit learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, you will be able to:

  1. Perform pelvic, vascular and obstetric diagnostic scans.
  2. Interpret information from a variety of sources to formulate an appropriate sonographic protocol and differential diagnosis.
  3. Critique images for diagnostic sufficiency.
  4. Conduct yourself professionally demonstrating safe practice.

Accredited Medical Sonographers are required to be able to perform pelvic, vascular and obstetric diagnostic scans, critique images, interpret information to reach a differential diagnosis  and demonstrate professional behavior to meet the ASA competency standards for the entry level sonographer.
