MEDS20003 - Medical Sonography Clinical Practicum 2

General Information

Unit Synopsis

This clinical course builds on the Medical Sonography Clinical Practicum 1. Students will perform superficial structure, pelvic, obstetric and vascular diagnostic scans to meet the Australian Sonography Association (ASA) Entry Level Sonographer Competency Standards and perform musculoskeletal scans to a beginner level competency standard. Students will interpret findings to formulate a differential diagnosis and engage with their clinical supervisors in a critical appraisal of their professional behavior.

Important note: Students enrolled in a subsequent unit who failed their pre-requisite unit, should drop the subsequent unit before the census date or within 10 working days of Fail grade notification. Students who do not drop the unit in this timeframe cannot later drop the unit without academic and financial liability. Attendance Requirements

All on-campus students are expected to attend scheduled classes – in some units, these classes are identified as a mandatory (pass/fail) component and attendance is compulsory. International students, on a student visa, must maintain a full time study load and meet both attendance and academic progress requirements in each study period (satisfactory attendance for International students is defined as maintaining at least an 80% attendance record).

Assessment documents were weighted too heavily on non scanning skills

Competency assessment paperwork needs to be re-written for this unit to better reflect the level of a graduate sonographer.

Practical competency assessments were modified. A greater emphasis was placed on scanning skills to reflect a postgraduate clinical placement unit.

Unit learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, you will be able to:

  1. Perform diagnostic scans in five areas to meet the ASA Competency Standards for the Entry Level Sonographer.
  2. Interpret information from a variety of sources to formulate an appropriate sonographic protocol and differential diagnosis.
  3. Critique images for diagnostic sufficiency.
  4. Conduct yourself professionally demonstrating safe practice.

Accredited Medical Sonographers are required to be able to perform diagnostic scans in five areas, critique images, interpret information to reach a differential diagnosis  and demonstrate professional behavior to meet the ASA competency standards for the entry level sonographer.
