MEDS20006 - Advanced Musculoskeletal Ultrasound

General Information

Unit Synopsis

This unit will enable you to gain expertise in advanced musculoskeletal ultrasound. To acquire the advanced knowledge and skills required to perform scans in musculoskeletal sonography you will study standard and advanced views of musculoskeletal areas of the body. You will develop the ability to interpret the clinical signs, symptoms and diagnostic test results associated with the complex pathophysiological conditions of the musculoskeletal system. To evaluate existing and emerging technology, diagnostic parameters and radiological interventions in musculoskeletal ultrasound you will undertake a review of the relevant literature in an area of your choice and present your findings.

Attendance Requirements

All on-campus students are expected to attend scheduled classes – in some units, these classes are identified as a mandatory (pass/fail) component and attendance is compulsory. International students, on a student visa, must maintain a full time study load and meet both attendance and academic progress requirements in each study period (satisfactory attendance for International students is defined as maintaining at least an 80% attendance record).

Assessment Overview

Recommended Student Time Commitment

Each 6-credit Postgraduate unit at CQUniversity requires an overall time commitment of an average of 12.5 hours of study per week, making a total of 150 hours for the unit.

Assessment Tasks

Assessment Task Weighting
1. Written Assessment 50%
2. Written Assessment 50%

This is a graded unit: your overall grade will be calculated from the marks or grades for each assessment task, based on the relative weightings shown in the table above. You must obtain an overall mark for the unit of at least 50%, or an overall grade of ‘pass’ in order to pass the unit. If any ‘pass/fail’ tasks are shown in the table above they must also be completed successfully (‘pass’ grade). You must also meet any minimum mark requirements specified for a particular assessment task, as detailed in the ‘assessment task’ section (note that in some instances, the minimum mark for a task may be greater than 50%).

Feedback, Recommendations and Responses

Every unit is reviewed for enhancement each year. At the most recent review, the following staff and student feedback items were identified and recommendations were made.

Source: Student feedback "Have your say" through Moodle.
Feedback
The feedback and draft process for the written assessment really aided my learning.
Recommendation
The draft process for the written assessment and subsequent in-depth feedback aided student learning.
Action Taken
Rolling feedback was again provided in term 3, 2021, for the written assessment (completion of an e-poster). This allowed students to learn during the completion of the written assessment task.
Source: Student feedback "Have your say" through Moodle.
Feedback
The lectures were really well set out and heaps of additional resources were provided which helped my learning.
Recommendation
The way the lectures were set out and the additional resources provided allowed for a deeper understanding.
Action Taken
The lectures were again offered in a way so that they conveyed a simple and clear message to allow students to gain a deep understanding of important concepts.
Source: Student feedback "Have your say" through Moodle.
Feedback
There was a lot of information provided in the 'additional resources' and there was pressure to go through it all.
Recommendation
Some students thought that they needed to engage with every additional resource provided, and that knowledge regarding these would be assessed in the final assessment. Hence such students felt there was pressure to highly familiarise themselves with all the additional content.
Action Taken
The weekly lectures were separated from additional learning resources and presented under separate subheadings for each week on the unit Moodle site. This allowed students to clearly identify the 'must know' content from the 'good to know' content. This allowed students to not get too overwhelmed by the amount of learning resources provided each week and ensure students focused their learning on the important concepts for each week of learning. This was reiterated for them in interactive tutorials.
Source: Student emails.
Feedback
Students appreciated the rolling feedback provided regarding the written assessment drafts, which helped them learn.
Recommendation
Continue to provide rolling feedback on written assessment draft submissions.
Action Taken
Nil.
Unit learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, you will be able to:

  1. Differentiate the aeitiology and sonographic appearance of complex pathophysiological conditions of musculoskeletal structures.
  2. Contrast typical static and dynamic views used to assess musculoskeletal structures.
  3. Evaluate and present information concerning existing and emerging technology, diagnostic parameters and radiological interventions in a chosen area of musculoskeletal ultrasound based on a review of relevant literature.
  4. Apply practical skills and critical thinking to advanced clinical assessment of the musculoskeletal system.

This masters unit does not lead to entry into the sonography profession.

It is for advanced practice by qualified practitioners who are currently undertaking musculoskeletal ultrasound examinations.

As such it does not require external accreditation.
