MEDS20007 - Paediatric Ultrasound

General Information

Unit Synopsis

This unit will enable you to gain knowledge concerning the performance of paediatric ultrasound, including cardiac assessment. You will develop the advanced knowledge and skills required to interprete the clinical signs, symptoms and diagnostic test results associated with complex pathophysiological conditions in the paediatric patient. Comparison of imaging, prognosis and treatment options will be undertaken within an ethical framework of family-centred practice and patient safety. To evaluate existing and emerging technology, diagnostic parameters and radiological interventions in paediatric ultrasound you will undertake a review of the relevant literature in an area of your choice and present your findings. Please note that you will be required to have clinical access in order to undertake and review a number of clinical cases.

Attendance Requirements

All on-campus students are expected to attend scheduled classes – in some units, these classes are identified as a mandatory (pass/fail) component and attendance is compulsory. International students, on a student visa, must maintain a full time study load and meet both attendance and academic progress requirements in each study period (satisfactory attendance for International students is defined as maintaining at least an 80% attendance record).

Each 6-credit Postgraduate unit at CQUniversity requires an overall time commitment of an average of 12.5 hours of study per week, making a total of 150 hours for the unit.

This is a graded unit: your overall grade will be calculated from the marks or grades for each assessment task, based on the relative weightings shown in the table above. You must obtain an overall mark for the unit of at least 50%, or an overall grade of ‘pass’ in order to pass the unit. If any ‘pass/fail’ tasks are shown in the table above they must also be completed successfully (‘pass’ grade). You must also meet any minimum mark requirements specified for a particular assessment task, as detailed in the ‘assessment task’ section (note that in some instances, the minimum mark for a task may be greater than 50%).

Feedback
The relevance of the written assessment task to the learning outcomes of the unit was not clear.
Recommendation
’Provision of video lecture to articulate requirements of the assessment task and its relevance to advanced paediatric sonography.
Action Taken
A video to unpack the written assessment task, expectations for students and a discussion of the marking rubric was provided to students.

Feedback
Lectures could be provided with examples of practical scanning tips.
Recommendation
Where appropriate, clinically relevant practical components will be included into lectures to enhance clinical practice.
Action Taken
Lectures were sourced from industry experts, to discuss clinical scenarios and advanced paediatric sonographic cases from tertiary teaching hospitals around Australia. A tutorial was also provided by an industry expert to allow discussions about practical scanning tips to be used in clinical practice. This tutorial was very well received by students.

The feedback provided on the first assessment task was helpful to allow improvements in the second assessment task to be successfully implemented.
Recommendation
Continue to provide in-depth feedback on assessment tasks, including advice that can be used to enhance subsequent assessment submissions within this unit and other Master by coursework units.
Action Taken
In-depth feedback on the written assessment was provided. The feedback was relevant not only for this unit (MEDS20007) but also general feedback about writing at an AQF 9 level to allow feedback to be used in other CV83 (Masters of Medical Ultrasound) units.

The marking rubrics for the assessment tasks were confusing to follow.
Recommendation
Update the marking rubrics. Ensure that rubrics used clearly and simply outline the task and the expectations in regard to academic wriring.

The marking rubric related to the written assessment was updated to clearly outline the task, expectations required to be addressed by students and clear mark allocation.

Recommendation
Continue to support students regarding the written assessment in tutorials and via email correspondence. Consider developing a ‘writing circle’ for students, to discuss sections of written assessment and allow for peer and tutor review in real time.

Students found the written assessment challenging, particularly adhering to academic writing expectations and conventions.
Recommendation
Continue to include a written assessment task in this unit. Ensure adequate scaffolding of students in terms of academic writing, which they find challenging. Provide clear expectations of academic writing at an AQF level 9 when unpacking the assessment task for students.

Unit learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, you will be able to:

  1. Differentiate the clinical appearance, aetiology and outcomes of advanced ultrasound assessment of paediatric and congenital disease, including echocardiographic vews of the paediatric heart.
  2. Evaluate the physiology, pathophysiology and pharmacological factors relevant to diagnostic and therapeutic procedures in the paediatric patient.
  3. Evaluate and present information concerning existing and emerging technology, diagnostic parameters and radiological interventions in a chosen area of paediatric ultrasound based on a review of relevant literature.
  4. Apply practical skills and critical thinking to advanced clinical assessment and reporting of the paediatric patient.

This masters unit does not lead to entry into the sonography profession. It is for advanced practice by qualified practitioners. As such it does not require external accreditation but we will be seeking approval for the course from the accrediting body, the ASAR.
