General Information

Unit Synopsis

The purpose of the Medical Science Research Project 1 course is to provide students with training in research. Students are required to independently undertake an investigation of a research question in an area of medical science. This research question will be fully investigated and reported in written scholarly form in the Medical Science Research Project 2 course. The research question will be of significance to an area of medical science related to the students' program of enrolment and will be undertaken under the principal supervision of a member of that programs' staff.

Attendance Requirements

All on-campus students are expected to attend scheduled classes – in some units, these classes are identified as a mandatory (pass/fail) component and attendance is compulsory. International students, on a student visa, must maintain a full time study load and meet both attendance and academic progress requirements in each study period (satisfactory attendance for International students is defined as maintaining at least an 80% attendance record).

Assessment Overview

Recommended Student Time Commitment

Each 6-credit Postgraduate unit at CQUniversity requires an overall time commitment of an average of 12.5 hours of study per week, making a total of 150 hours for the unit.

Assessment Tasks

Assessment Task Weighting
1. Written Assessment 100%

This is a graded unit: your overall grade will be calculated from the marks or grades for each assessment task, based on the relative weightings shown in the table above. You must obtain an overall mark for the unit of at least 50%, or an overall grade of ‘pass’ in order to pass the unit. If any ‘pass/fail’ tasks are shown in the table above they must also be completed successfully (‘pass’ grade). You must also meet any minimum mark requirements specified for a particular assessment task, as detailed in the ‘assessment task’ section (note that in some instances, the minimum mark for a task may be greater than 50%).

Consult the University’s Grades and Results Policy for more details of interim results and final grades

Feedback, Recommendations and Responses

Every unit is reviewed for enhancement each year. At the most recent review, the following staff and student feedback items were identified and recommendations were made.

Source: Sessional marker emails and student emails.
Feedback
Students and sessional markers liked the formalised formative feedback opportunities with a draft submission deadline before assessment submissions.
Recommendation
Continue to provide feedback via formalised formative submissions under the assessment tab on Moodle with a deadline for feedback.
Action Taken
Formalised formative feedback for the two assessment items was continued with clear instructions and deadlines communicated to students and markers on how this was to be achieved.
Source: SUTE Unit Comments.
Feedback
Students appreciated the communication and support from the unit coordinator and sessional markers especially around assessment item expectations.
Recommendation
Continue to communicate regularly with students via the various Moodle forums, emails and Zoom tutorials.
Action Taken
Regular prompt communication and support was provided by the unit coordinator. Return of formative and summative assessment items were within two weeks.

Unit learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, you will be able to:

  1. Formulate a research question and specific hypotheses.
  2. Search, analyse and critically appraise data or textual information.
  3. Apply suitable bioethical principles to the proposal.

The purpose of Medical Science Research Project's 1 & 2 is to provide the student with training in developing, conducting, and communicating research across theoretical and applied domains. This requires students to undertake an investigation of a research question in an area of medical science aligned with their program of enrolment and to report the investigation in written scholarly form.  The research question to be investigated may have either theoretical or applied significance but will add to the body of discipline-specific knowledge and meet the performance criteria for the engaged research element of the appropriate professional competency standards.
