General Information

Unit Synopsis

On completion of this course students will be expected to perform at the level of a graduate, accredited medical sonographer. Students will be assessed in all key areas of the application of knowledge, skills and attributes at the fully competent level.

Important note: Students enrolled in a subsequent unit who failed their pre-requisite unit, should drop the subsequent unit before the census date or within 10 working days of Fail grade notification. Students who do not drop the unit in this timeframe cannot later drop the unit without academic and financial liability. Attendance Requirements

All on-campus students are expected to attend scheduled classes – in some units, these classes are identified as a mandatory (pass/fail) component and attendance is compulsory. International students, on a student visa, must maintain a full time study load and meet both attendance and academic progress requirements in each study period (satisfactory attendance for International students is defined as maintaining at least an 80% attendance record).

Unit learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, you will be able to:

  1. Exhibit professional behaviour expected of a practicing medical sonographer.
  2. Demonstrate professional competency in performing all studies using skills and knowledge of anatomy and physiology, patient care and instrumentation.
  3. Interpret and apply requests for sonographic examinations.
  4. Practice autonomously with supervision only in exceptional situations.
  5. Distinguish between normal and abnormal appearances.
  6. Critique images for diagnostic sufficiency and, if necessary, initiate corrective action.
  7. Solve sonographic problems using a variety of strategies.
  8. Evaluate his/her own thinking throughout and processes used in problem solving and decision making, and take responsibility for own actions.
  9. Manage the use of time and other resources to complete tasks and attain goals.
  10. Utilise reflective practice for personal and professional development.
  11. Write appropriate technical impressions and preliminary reports.
