General Information

Unit Synopsis

This unit prompts students to critically examine the role of individuals, groups and managers in promoting organisational effectiveness in a dynamic environment. The roles of individual and group performance is related to organisational effectiveness via multiple perspectives. Theoretical underpinnings of management processes is also addressed. Topics include emotions, values, attitudes, motivation, leadership, communication, group dynamics, management roles, strategic decision-making and organisational structures. If you have successfully completed the unit MGMT20124 you should not enrol in this unit.

Attendance Requirements

All on-campus students are expected to attend scheduled classes – in some units, these classes are identified as a mandatory (pass/fail) component and attendance is compulsory. International students, on a student visa, must maintain a full time study load and meet both attendance and academic progress requirements in each study period (satisfactory attendance for International students is defined as maintaining at least an 80% attendance record).

Recommended Student Time Commitment

Each 6-credit Postgraduate unit at CQUniversity requires an overall time commitment of an average of 12.5 hours of study per week, making a total of 150 hours for the unit.

This is a graded unit: your overall grade will be calculated from the marks or grades for each assessment task, based on the relative weightings shown in the table above. You must obtain an overall mark for the unit of at least 50%, or an overall grade of ‘pass’ in order to pass the unit. If any ‘pass/fail’ tasks are shown in the table above they must also be completed successfully (‘pass’ grade). You must also meet any minimum mark requirements specified for a particular assessment task, as detailed in the ‘assessment task’ section (note that in some instances, the minimum mark for a task may be greater than 50%).

Feedback
Content and assessment remain challenging for non-MBA students with no work experience
Recommendation
Further exploration of separate assessments for MBA and non-MBA cohorts should happen.
Action Taken
While separate assessment tasks remain non-viable, the way the assessment tasks are now being framed and explained to students appears to be assisting the non-MBA cohort to better understand the requirements and demonstrate the required level of knowledge and understanding.

Feedback
Further changes to the assessment task structure will help make the assessment tasks appropriate for both the MBA and non-MBA cohorts
Recommendation
An update is recommended to change the weighting and content of the first two assessment tasks, such that the major assessment task is not the first one due in the term. This change will also allow other adjustments to the assessment task structure that will make the unit more accessible for both cohorts of students enrolling into this unit.

Maintain group work task
Recommendation
While some students demonstrate resistance to the group work task, it is important to retain this task, as it is an important component of this unit, particularly as group dynamics are discussing in the unit, and the unit serves an important role in both the CL20 and CL21/CC74 courses as a source of genuine group work experience.

On successful completion of this unit, you will be able to:

  1. critically evaluate the changing nature of organisational effectiveness, particularly in the context of globalisation;
  2. critically analyse the main issues in organisational leadership and relate these issues to behaviour at multiple levels in organisations;
  3. critically analyse and prioritise current literature and key research in the field of management and organisations in multiple contexts and settings;
  4. evaluate and discuss managerial functions and organisational processes using a behavioural science framework; and
  5. prepare and present written papers and reports that demonstrates capacity to critically evaluate research concepts and theories and apply these in managerial contexts.
