NURS11149 - Foundations of Nursing Practice

General Information

Unit Synopsis

This course should introduce students to foundational nursing care in order to prepare them for safe nursing practice at a beginning level in the Australian clinical context. On completion of this course student should be able to describe the processes for basic assessment including blood pressure, pulse, respiration, temperature, ward urinalysis and integumentary status. Students should also be able to discuss process of risk assessment and prevention of complications, specific to falls manual handling and pressure ulcers, and basic infection control principles and strategies needed to prevent the transmission of infection between nurse and client. Nursing interventions to assist clients in the activities of their daily lives are practised including the holistic approach (physical, mental and social) in interacting with clients. Participation in the clinical laboratory sessions is compulsory for internal students and participation in the online tutorial and residential school is compulsory for flex students. PLEASE NOTE: Term 1 offering is for students enrolled in CQ23 Bachelor of Nursing only and Term 2 Mackay campus offering is for students enrolled in CG92 Bachelor of Medical Imaging and CG91 Bachelor of Medical Sonography and Graduate Diploma of Medical Sonography.

Important note: Students enrolled in a subsequent unit who failed their pre-requisite unit, should drop the subsequent unit before the census date or within 10 working days of Fail grade notification. Students who do not drop the unit in this timeframe cannot later drop the unit without academic and financial liability. Attendance Requirements

All on-campus students are expected to attend scheduled classes – in some units, these classes are identified as a mandatory (pass/fail) component and attendance is compulsory. International students, on a student visa, must maintain a full time study load and meet both attendance and academic progress requirements in each study period (satisfactory attendance for International students is defined as maintaining at least an 80% attendance record).

Each 6-credit Undergraduate unit at CQUniversity requires an overall time commitment of an average of 12.5 hours of study per week, making a total of 150 hours for the unit.

This is a graded unit: your overall grade will be calculated from the marks or grades for each assessment task, based on the relative weightings shown in the table above. You must obtain an overall mark for the unit of at least 50%, or an overall grade of ‘pass’ in order to pass the unit. If any ‘pass/fail’ tasks are shown in the table above they must also be completed successfully (‘pass’ grade). You must also meet any minimum mark requirements specified for a particular assessment task, as detailed in the ‘assessment task’ section (note that in some instances, the minimum mark for a task may be greater than 50%).

Unit learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, you will be able to:

  1. Describe of legal requirements of safe practice within the Australian context
  2. Discuss the process of risk assessment and preventative strategies, specific to falls, manual handling and impaired skin integrity
  3. Develop an understanding through practicing the process of the safe movement of simulated clients who require assistance with mobility and transferring
  4. Develop an understanding through practicing the process of assisting clients in the activities of their daily lives including the holistic approach (physical, mental and social) in interacting with clients
  5. Describe the process of acquiring and documentation of basic assessment data on a simulated client including blood pressure, pulse, respiration, temperature, oximetry, ward urinalysis, and integumentary status across the lifespan
  6. Discuss basic infection control principles and strategies needed to prevent the transmission of infection between nurse and client in varied health care settings
