NURS11154 - Foundations of Nursing Practice 2

General Information

Unit Synopsis

This unit builds on the foundational nursing knowledge, skills and dispositions developed in NURS11149 – Foundations of Nursing Practice 1. Concepts of therapeutic communication will be applied in the assessment and care of individuals. Students will have the opportunity to undertake simulated and actual patient assessment, planning and implementation of nursing care. Students will be expected to function within the scope of practice of a nursing student in accordance with Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA) Competency Standards for the Registered Nurse (2006) during compulsory clinical placement. Students who have satisfactorily completed NURS11150 Holistic Nursing Assessment and/or NURS11151 Beginning Nursing Practice are not required to complete this new unit.

Students who do not drop the unit in this timeframe cannot later drop the unit without academic and financial liability. Attendance Requirements

All on-campus students are expected to attend scheduled classes – in some units, these classes are identified as a mandatory (pass/fail) component and attendance is compulsory. International students, on a student visa, must maintain a full time study load and meet both attendance and academic progress requirements in each study period (satisfactory attendance for International students is defined as maintaining at least an 80% attendance record).

Each 6-credit Undergraduate unit at CQUniversity requires an overall time commitment of an average of 12.5 hours of study per week, making a total of 150 hours for the unit.

This is a graded unit: your overall grade will be calculated from the marks or grades for each assessment task, based on the relative weightings shown in the table above. You must obtain an overall mark for the unit of at least 50%, or an overall grade of ‘pass’ in order to pass the unit. If any ‘pass/fail’ tasks are shown in the table above they must also be completed successfully (‘pass’ grade). You must also meet any minimum mark requirements specified for a particular assessment task, as detailed in the ‘assessment task’ section (note that in some instances, the minimum mark for a task may be greater than 50%).

Students enjoyed the weekly lecture that was taped live via ISL and made available on moodle
Recommendation
A weekly lecture in some format, ISL, ECHO 360 will be available for students in upcoming terms

Some students who attended late clinical placements would like the lab sessions to be later in term
Recommendation
Students invited to make a time with a lecturer to attend labs close to placement dates to recap any areas of concern for the students. Unable to have the sessions later in term as placement dates commence post week four (4)

The due date for the written assignment fell while some students were attending clinical placement and this caused angst for some students

The due date cannot be changed to meet all student placement dates as the dates are diverse

On successful completion of this unit, you will be able to:

  1. Employ principles of therapeutic communication in the assessment and care of individuals.
  2. Undertake assessments of individuals in simulated and clinical environments.
  3. Plan, organise, document and participate in the provision of evidence-based care at a fundamental level in the clinical environment.
  4. Function within the scope of practice of a nursing student in accordance with ANMC competencies in an aged care or rehabilitation setting.
