NURS12152 - Transition to Nursing Studies 1

General Information

Unit Synopsis

This unit is aimed at students who are transitioning from the Diploma of Nursing to the Bachelor of Nursing. This transition requires the acquisition of the higher order critical thinking skills which are expected of a registered nurse. Students will be introduced to the scope of practice of Registered Nurses and legal and ethical frameworks which shape nursing practice. Students will also be introduced to the recovery approach to mental health care and build upon their knowledge and understanding of mental health and mental health nursing. Students will have the opportunity to utilise knowledge of the Enrolled Nurse role to analyse their transition to baccalaureate studies. Students will be expected to function within the scope of practice of a nursing student in accordance with Australian Nursing and Midwifery Council (ANMC) competencies during a compulsory mental health clinical placement.

This unit is only for students who have completed a Diploma in Nursing (constructor consent ) Condition

Important note: Students enrolled in a subsequent unit who failed their pre-requisite unit, should drop the subsequent unit before the census date or within 10 working days of Fail grade notification. Students who do not drop the unit in this timeframe cannot later drop the unit without academic and financial liability. Attendance Requirements

All on-campus students are expected to attend scheduled classes – in some units, these classes are identified as a mandatory (pass/fail) component and attendance is compulsory. International students, on a student visa, must maintain a full time study load and meet both attendance and academic progress requirements in each study period (satisfactory attendance for International students is defined as maintaining at least an 80% attendance record).

Each 12-credit Undergraduate unit at CQUniversity requires an overall time commitment of an average of 25 hours of study per week, making a total of 300 hours for the unit.

This is a graded unit: your overall grade will be calculated from the marks or grades for each assessment task, based on the relative weightings shown in the table above. You must obtain an overall mark for the unit of at least 50%, or an overall grade of ‘pass’ in order to pass the unit. If any ‘pass/fail’ tasks are shown in the table above they must also be completed successfully (‘pass’ grade). You must also meet any minimum mark requirements specified for a particular assessment task, as detailed in the ‘assessment task’ section (note that in some instances, the minimum mark for a task may be greater than 50%).

Feedback
There is a large volume of PO (Practical outstanding) awards due to a public holiday where students were unable to complete 80 hours of clinical practice. Students will be required to make up these hours prior to completion of the program. I recommend WIL planning to consider public holidays, as the time made up will not necessary be spend in the area of Mental health as required by this course.

Feedback
The major issue for this course was the large numbers of students who dropped the course prior to census date due to lack of fornt end preparation for Clinical practice in terms of clinical prerequisites. Accurate information also was not conveyed in the handbook.
Recommendation
This could be overcome by the student being informed in their enrolment letter to commence preparation of their pre-clinical requirements in preparation for clinical placement. Accurate information to be conveyed in the handbook.

  3. Outline the role and scope of the nurse in contemporary health care.

  5. Locate and critically evaluate information from various sources to inform scholarly activity.
  6. Examine the importance of consumer/client leadership and consumer/client perspective of the Recovery Model in contemporary mental health settings and examine factors that promote Recovery.
  7. Critically reflect on the use of self in the development and maintenance of therapeutic relationships with mental health consumers. their families and significant others.
  8. Use a Recovery Approach to assess, plan, implement, evaluate, accurately document and communicate evidenced based nursing care for the consumer experiencing mental illness utilising a recovery approach.
  9. Function within the scope of practice of a nursing student in accordance with ANMC competencies in a mental health setting.
