Attendance Requirements

All on-campus students are expected to attend scheduled classes – in some units, these classes are identified as a mandatory (pass/fail) component and attendance is compulsory. International students, on a student visa, must maintain a full time study load and meet both attendance and academic progress requirements in each study period (satisfactory attendance for International students is defined as maintaining at least an 80% attendance record).

Assessment Overview

Recommended Student Time Commitment

Each 6-credit Undergraduate unit at CQUniversity requires an overall time commitment of an average of 12.5 hours of study per week, making a total of 150 hours for the unit.

Assessment Tasks

Assessment Task Weighting
1. Written Assessment 50%

You must obtain an overall mark for the unit of at least 50%, or an overall grade of ‘pass’ in order to pass the unit. If any ‘pass/fail’ tasks are shown in the table above they must also be completed successfully (‘pass’ grade). You must also meet any minimum mark requirements specified for a particular assessment task, as detailed in the ‘assessment task’ section (note that in some instances, the minimum mark for a task may be greater than 50%).

Feedback
Zoom sessions allowed critical thinking to take place. The interactive nature was enjoyable.
Recommendation
Zoom sessions will continue to be run at the end of the week to consolidate the weekly case studies. A Q&A set up will continue to be utilised.
Action Taken
Zoom sessions were carried out at the end of the week. A flipped classroom approach was used as previous years. To improve interaction and foster peer support, group work was used within the zoom session and a structured program followed using a critical thinking template and weekly case study which were linked to assessments.

Feedback
Content was in depth and helped critical thinking.
Recommendation
Content of the unit will remain the same.
Action Taken

Feedback
Assessment tasks were relevant and useful. Enjoyed referring to Nursing Standards to complete assessments. Feedback was a good way to learn.
Recommendation
All assessments will continue to be reviewed by the Assessment Review Committee to ensure they are relevant and linked to the learning outcomes of the unit.
Action Taken
The team worked with a teaching mentor to review both the quizzes and the written assessment. Quizzes were written in line with the weekly content and addressed relevant LO's. The written assessment was linked to a case study and addressed the relevant LO's. Assessments were then reviewed by the Assessment Review Committee.

Confusion over how to print the book as a study guide
Recommendation
This information is available to students through a search on Moodle on how to print. Should students have difficulty doing this they can contact TASAC the IT assistance and information service who will assist students with this.
Action Taken
Instruction on how to print the book was demonstrated in a video in the welcome section of the Moodle site. Instructions were also given in the News Forum section of the unit.

Too much content and reading
Recommendation
This unit is a large unit and covers many conditions, disease processes, nursing assessment along with nursing management and treatment. The content is required to meet the learning objectives of the unit and the appropriate AQF standards. The coordinating team will try to link the weekly content with NURS12156 Pharmacology to assist students to streamline their learning regarding content and reading. We will be working with Learning and Teaching to review Moodle design, content and assessments.
Action Taken
The team worked with a mentor to review and realign content with weekly LO's and LO's of the unit. This streamlined the content and gave it more structure.

Feedback
Zoom sessions difficult to hear
Recommendation
To continue to improve the student experience when attending zoom sessions. We will encourage correct zoom etiquette.
Action Taken
Zoom etiquette was discussed before sessions were undertaken. Zooms structured in groups and each group was asked for a spokes person so that the discussion could be facilitated. Therefore managing exchange of communication more appropriately.

Feedback
Flipped classroom concept difficult to grasp. Students have not encountered this way of teaching before.
Recommendation
A flipped classroom is an effective and recommended instructional strategy that moves activities, including those that may have traditionally been considered homework, into the classroom. Students were asked to review a weekly case study with activities. A video explaining what a 'flipped classroom' is and how it works was provided on the Moodle site. The first Zoom session also included an explanation of the process. Students unable to attend were given the same instruction on how to work through the case study and then watch the recorded discussion to assess whether they had correctly answered the questions. All students were encouraged to contact lecturers if they had issues and extra explanation was given. This mode of teaching will remain in the unit, however, adjustments will be made to the process to enhance attendance and participation.

Unit learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, you will be able to:

  1. Apply legal and ethical frameworks and evidence based practice principles to explore the complexity of person centred nursing care in the medical-surgical setting
  2. Examine the use of technology to inform person centred nursing care within the medical-surgical setting
  3. Discuss communication patterns and process required to inform person safety and quality within the medical-surgical setting
  4. Use cultural sensitvity principles to develop person centred nursing interventions and discharge planning relevant to the medical-surgical setting.

The learning outcomes are linked to the Australian Nursing and Midwifery Accreditation (ANMAC) Standards for registered nurses and the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA) registered nurse standards for practice.
