NURS12164 - Professional Experience Placement 3

General Information

Unit Synopsis

In this unit, you will have the opportunity to practice nursing care in the community or rehabilitative environment. You will apply the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA) registered nurse standards for practice (2016). You will continue to explore the importance of the National Safety and Quality Health Service (NSQHS) Standards (2017) to all nursing practice in Australia and use the Patient Safety Competency Framework (PSCF) (Levett-Jones et al., 2017) in your practice as a nursing student. You will be expected to identify risk and recognise and respond appropriately to the deteriorating patient in the simulated and clinical environment. You will work within your scope of practice using the decision-making framework (DMF) (NMBA, 2020). You are required to participate in a compulsory three (3) day residential school prior to attending professional experience placement for this unit. This unit includes a 80 hour block professional experience placement in a community or rehabilitative environment. For students, who have completed NURS12157, Concepts of Mental Health Nursing but have not completed, NURS12158, Clinical Nursing Practice 3, you will be undertaking an extra 80 hour professional experience placement block. You must meet specific mandatory health, safety and security requirements to be eligible to attend each professional experience placement. Professional experience placements may be limited in your community and you may be placed in other locations. Please be prepared financially and personally to cover the costs to relocate for placements. Due to the limited availability of placements, some block placements have start and/or end dates that fall outside standard term dates.

Attendance Requirements

All on-campus students are expected to attend scheduled classes – in some units, these classes are identified as a mandatory (pass/fail) component and attendance is compulsory. International students, on a student visa, must maintain a full time study load and meet both attendance and academic progress requirements in each study period (satisfactory attendance for International students is defined as maintaining at least an 80% attendance record).

Assessment Overview

Recommended Student Time Commitment

Each 6-credit Undergraduate unit at CQUniversity requires an overall time commitment of an average of 12.5 hours of study per week, making a total of 150 hours for the unit.

Assessment Tasks

Assessment Task Weighting
1. In-class Test(s) 0%
2. Practical Assessment 0%
3. Professional Practice Placement 0%
4. Written Assessment 60%

Feedback, Recommendations and Responses

Every unit is reviewed for enhancement each year. At the most recent review, the following staff and student feedback items were identified and recommendations were made.

Source: Student evaluation survey
Feedback
"Unit coordinators were really supportive and had strong communication."
Recommendation
Continue to provide transparent, timely and informative communication with students.
Action Taken
The three Unit Coordinators shared a roster for responding to student emails and Moodle forums. The majority of student correspondence was responded to within 24 hours.

Feedback
"Rather than being full of anxiety about going on placement after this res, I am excited and feel like I have been able to learn the required skills based on the way the content has been delivered."
Recommendation
Continue to deliver experiential student led simulation targeted at student individual learning needs and unit objectives.
Action Taken
On-campus clinical simulations mapped to unit learning outcomes continued to be student-led, facilitating individual learning needs. In on-campus learning sessions, time for student-led deliberate practice of individual clinical skills was provided.

Feedback
"PEP 3 assessment content is far too heavy. 3 days of residential school, incorporating 2 exams, then 80 hours of professional placement, 2 ANSAT's, a written assessment and an external exam. I feel this was extremely heavy and repetitive. With the stress of these assessments overshadowing the positive learning experience that professional placement could have been."
Recommendation
Proposal has been submitted to change NURS12164 from a graded unit to a pass / fail unit. In the application a request to decrease assessment from five to three has also been requested.
Action Taken
The unit was changed to a pass / fail unit, and assessments decreased from five to four.

Feedback
Thoroughly enjoyed this unit and it was easy to navigate through in Moodle.
Recommendation
Continue to used CQU renew tile format for Moodle site.
Action Taken
CQU renew tile format continued to be used with the addition of embedding H5P activities. Estimated timeframes for activity completion were provided for all activities to assist in study planning.

Feedback
"Having all of the unit content at the beginning of term has been helpful in managing the rest of the term with placement, working and the other 3 units."
Recommendation
Continue using pre-brief as the content repository before on-campus learning sessions and clinical practicum.
Action Taken
Nil.

Feedback
"Too much learning content before early res school."
Recommendation
Review pre-brief learning content to condense it into smaller, user-friendly packages.
Action Taken
Nil.
Source: SUTE Unit Comments
Feedback
"As there were only 10 practice questions provided, it would be helpful to have more as I felt the questions were more complicated than those on the quiz."
Recommendation
The SNM&SS is currently developing school support for medication calculations through a Maths Moodle site.
Action Taken
Nil.

Feedback
"I would appreciate if the unit coordinator would have approached the first time placement students and assisted them with the expectations of completing the ANSAT."
Recommendation
Develop an information package and hold an information session for students undertaking a clinical placement unit for the first time within CQU Bachelor of Nursing program.
Action Taken
Nil.
