NURS13126 - Critical Care Nursing

General Information

Unit Synopsis

The unit will introduce the student to concepts and knowledge needed to effectively care for patients experiencing complex alterations in health. Students will critically consider the care provided to patients, including strategies to assist individuals and significant others when dealing with health crises. Assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of safe nursing care in various complex health care settings will be discussed. Effective communication and collaboration in high acuity and emergency management settings will be emphasised in this unit. Students will be expected to function within the scope of practice of a nursing student in accordance with Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA) Competency Standards for the Registered Nurse (2006) during a compulsory clinical placement.

Attendance Requirements

All on-campus students are expected to attend scheduled classes – in some units, these classes are identified as a mandatory (pass/fail) component and attendance is compulsory. International students, on a student visa, must maintain a full time study load and meet both attendance and academic progress requirements in each study period (satisfactory attendance for International students is defined as maintaining at least an 80% attendance record).

This is a graded unit: your overall grade will be calculated from the marks or grades for each assessment task, based on the relative weightings shown in the table above. You must obtain an overall mark for the unit of at least 50%, or an overall grade of ‘pass’ in order to pass the unit. If any ‘pass/fail’ tasks are shown in the table above they must also be completed successfully (‘pass’ grade). You must also meet any minimum mark requirements specified for a particular assessment task, as detailed in the ‘assessment task’ section (note that in some instances, the minimum mark for a task may be greater than 50%).

- Residential schools should be smaller sizes and be at least 3 days to promote learning and teaching. - Weekly lectures to facilitate students engagement. - Depart from online marking when students are not well prepared to receive their feedback online. - Moodle site should be well set up to promote navigation. - Teaching staff will discuss issues directly with the course coordinator or head of program.
