Feedback, Recommendations and Responses

Every unit is reviewed for enhancement each year. At the most recent review, the following staff and student feedback items were identified and recommendations were made.

Feedback
The RES school was rushed and disorganised between the groups when they split between the lecturers. There were not enough hands-on time or guidance for new skills, individual skills stations would have been more beneficial with a lecturer watching your attempt rather than students trying to navigate their way through the procedure together not knowing if it was correct or not and then giving up without actually doing the skill properly.
Recommendation
As previous in term 1, 2020 a meeting will be held with facilitators to discuss the role and expectation of teaching in the residential school, that facilitator follows the guide, and timetable, and demonstrated the skill prior to students completing the clinical skills stations.
Action Taken
Meetings with facilitators to improve student learning.

Feedback
Residential school class sizes were far too big.
Recommendation
Provide feedback to HOC and Dean of College for further discussion and recommendations
Action Taken
Head of Course and timetabling reviewed residential school class numbers. Class numbers were capped at 32 students with two facilitators.

ZOOM Sessions were helpful and supportive. The assessment tasks were Easy to understand what was required. Moodle was easy to navigate.
Recommendation
Continue to have a regular drop-in zoom session throughout the term to support students. Continue to provide clear instructions and exemplars for assessments. Continue to improve the interactive face of the Moodle site.
Action Taken
Increased number of zoom sessions included assessment information and the opportunity for students to drop in to discuss any concerns and clinical placement. Increased email correspondence and details in the forum. Exemplars provided for all assessments to improve clarity for students.

Res school needs to be improved. More practical skill teaching required, especially after covid when previous res was done online. Looking at the skills required within our scope as a third year nurse, I feel that we should be taught and allowed time to practice basic skills with real-time feedback rather than "watch a youtube video".
Recommendation
Continue to encourage the students to seek available lab time to enable further consolidation of skills being taught in the lab. Encourage skills stations to remain set up where possible during residential school. This will give students greater accessibility while other students are being assessed. Lab availability early morning before the day commences during residential to allow students to practice their skills. Coordinators to continue to be available to support and encourage students to be proactive in their learning.

Feedback
The medcals exam for this unit was the worst experience of my whole degree. The scenario based questions were not fair and resulted in nearly half of the people in my res school failing. If this doesn't tell you something i'm not sure what would. Some of the questions were way beyond the scope of a student nurse and even some of the teachers had a hard time answering the questions once we showed them after we had failed the question. The questions if in the real world would have been beyond many nurses scopes of practice and they would have had the chance to seek clarification from the pharmacy, Dr or senior RN. The online medication calculations. The programme used isn’t very accurate and the questions can be several answers due to interpretation but you just have to be lucky enough to pick the right answer.
Recommendation
This unit is the last time being taught and a new unit is currently being rewritten for term one 2022. Consideration to the delivery mode and required content will be reviewed, to align with the recommended medication calculations that are appropiate for third year nursing students.

Explanation on applying for a grad position. Having assessments based on graduate positions was very beneficial. The guest speakers for the zoom sessions were brilliant. The lectures were very helpful on zooms or speaking to them face to face. I appreciated the portfolio assessment as it begun to prepare me for the graduate application process. The course coordinators were great both online and during our residential school. I felt supported during my placement.
Recommendation
To continue to have a focus on incorporating post graduate applications into the unit. Further collaboration and student interaction with Health services recruitment representatives.

Feedback
Overall I thoroughly enjoyed this subject. The learning material and everything taught was reflected in my placement and I was able to perform and exceed in my learning and experiences. The interation between the lecturers and the students was fantastic. At all times the lecturers were eager and happy to assist with any issues we may have encountered. The content of the unit has given me good prepartion for my future as a nurse. The residential school was well run and I feel I learnt a great deal that helped me in placement.
Recommendation
Continue to maintain a strong focus on student engagement and retention.
