NURS13142 - Professional Experience Placement 4

General Information

Unit Synopsis

In this unit, you will have the opportunity to practice nursing care in the complex care environment. You will apply the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA) Registered Nurse Standards for Practice (2016). You will continue to explore the importance of the National Safety and Quality Health Service (NSQHS) Standards (2017) to all nursing practice in Australia and use the Patient Safety Competency Framework (PSCF) (Levett-Jones et al., 2017) in your practice as a nursing student. You will be expected to identify risk and recognise and respond appropriately to the deteriorating patient in the simulated and clinical environment. You will work within your scope of practice using the decision-making framework (DMF) (NMBA, 2020). You are required to participate in a compulsory four (4) day residential school prior to attending professional experience placement for this unit. This unit includes a 160 hour block professional experience placement in a complex care environment. You must meet specific mandatory health, safety and security requirements to be eligible to attend each professional experience placement. Professional experience placements may be limited in your community and you may be placed in other locations. Please be prepared financially and personally to cover the costs to relocate for placements. Due to the limited availability of placements, some block placements have start and/or end dates that fall outside standard term dates.

Important note: Students enrolled in a subsequent unit who failed their pre-requisite unit, should drop the subsequent unit before the census date or within 10 working days of Fail grade notification. Students who do not drop the unit in this timeframe cannot later drop the unit without academic and financial liability. Attendance Requirements

All on-campus students are expected to attend scheduled classes – in some units, these classes are identified as a mandatory (pass/fail) component and attendance is compulsory. International students, on a student visa, must maintain a full time study load and meet both attendance and academic progress requirements in each study period (satisfactory attendance for International students is defined as maintaining at least an 80% attendance record).

This is a graded unit: your overall grade will be calculated from the marks or grades for each assessment task, based on the relative weightings shown in the table above. You must obtain an overall mark for the unit of at least 50%, or an overall grade of ‘pass’ in order to pass the unit. If any ‘pass/fail’ tasks are shown in the table above they must also be completed successfully (‘pass’ grade). You must also meet any minimum mark requirements specified for a particular assessment task, as detailed in the ‘assessment task’ section (note that in some instances, the minimum mark for a task may be greater than 50%).

Feedback
Removing medsafe has really made practicing for med calc difficult. Students were given 15 questions to practice with no answers. For basic maths this is ok
Recommendation
Greater access to medication calculation learning resources to be provided in future terms. A drop-in zoom session dedicated to medication calculations may also be offered.
Action Taken
Math Central was launched at the beginning of term 1, 2023 to provide learning and practice resources for medication calculations and medication safety.

Feedback
I found this to be a really well run unit. The expectations were very clear, and I can see how this unit will help me in my nursing career. The res school I attended was also very well run, we all felt very supported and it was really helpful to have time in the lab to practice things that weren't necessarily part of this unit, but things we had learned in previous units but felt we needed to practice again. No question was dismissed, time was taken to explain everything. Thank you!

Feedback
The learning material in the study guide for residential school did not match the content of the actual residential school in Rockhampton. Very different.
Recommendation
Continue to emphasise with all teaching academics to stay aligned with the provided curriculum, content and learning outcomes.
Action Taken
All teaching staff were briefed prior to the commencement of term, and the unit coordination team were available to provide support to teaching staff while residential schools were underway. Additionally, teaching staff were provided with a residential school planner, lesson plan and clinical learning manual with answer guide to support teaching and promote consistency.

Feedback
So far, it is the best placement and residential school which I experience. I learn many things from my placement, for example revisiting A & P, Pathophysiology, aseptic technique (a skill that I have not used for a long time), and dietary requirements. I definitely gain lots of knowledge and experience which will be applicable to my nursing journey.
Recommendation
Continue to focus in providing clinical placements through liaising with the IPOs teams in order to keep placements aligned with the learning needs and desired learning outcomes for all individual students.

The content covered during residential schools was specifically planned to be applicable and transferrable to the vast array of clinical settings that the students were allocated to undertake their clinical placement in.

The residential school experience seems to vary depending upon who teaches it. I would like for the class to be taught uniformly.

Weekly telephone calls from Unit Coordinators when students are undertaking placement are helpful and appreciated.

Maintain weekly telephone contact with Clinical Facilitators and industry partners during clinical placements to provide ongoing support and guidance to staff that are supervising students.
