NURS20152 - Advanced Therapeutic Interventions

General Information

Unit Synopsis

Approaches to mental health care have developed dramatically in the past 150 years. From containment and custodial-based care, mental health nurses now aspire to therapeutic approaches that are person-centred, goal-oriented, collaborative and evidence-based. This unit explores specialist techniques intentionally used to create ease, promote self-understanding and motivate pathways to recovery within specific mental health contexts. You will research, discuss and apply traditional and emerging psychosocial approaches such as cognitive behaviour therapy, solution focused counselling, open diaologue and other group therapies. An opportunity to focus your inquiry into one or more specialist services, where advanced techniques are emphasised, will be provided.

Attendance Requirements

All on-campus students are expected to attend scheduled classes – in some units, these classes are identified as a mandatory (pass/fail) component and attendance is compulsory. International students, on a student visa, must maintain a full time study load and meet both attendance and academic progress requirements in each study period (satisfactory attendance for International students is defined as maintaining at least an 80% attendance record).

Each 6-credit Postgraduate unit at CQUniversity requires an overall time commitment of an average of 12.5 hours of study per week, making a total of 150 hours for the unit.

This is a graded unit: your overall grade will be calculated from the marks or grades for each assessment task, based on the relative weightings shown in the table above. You must obtain an overall mark for the unit of at least 50%, or an overall grade of ‘pass’ in order to pass the unit. If any ‘pass/fail’ tasks are shown in the table above they must also be completed successfully (‘pass’ grade). You must also meet any minimum mark requirements specified for a particular assessment task, as detailed in the ‘assessment task’ section (note that in some instances, the minimum mark for a task may be greater than 50%).

Term 2 - 2018 : The overall satisfaction for students in the last offering of this course was 4.8 (on a 5 point Likert scale), based on a 40% response rate.

The learning platform was well received. Students felt Moodle was easily navigated.

Feedback
Some students had difficulty taping their video to you tube.
Recommendation
Investigate other ways to provide videos for assessment items, such as a trial of using Facebook Messenger for an easier way of taping and forwarded assessment items.
Action Taken
Face book and messenger were scrutinized as potential platforms for student videos however due to privacy issues and space restrictions youtube was superior. Students did not report any issues in recording and uploading clips to the youtube in 2018. A demonstration video was provided.

One student suggested the weeks of learning could be opened earlier.
Recommendation
Consider opening the units two weeks ahead of time so that students have earlier access to learning resources.
Action Taken
Weeks of learning were all opened up at beginning of semester. There was an issue with week 6, however this was opened up two weeks prior.

Students felt the unit was particular relevant to mental health nursing and enjoyed that they could relate the learning to the workplace

Continue to present contemporary advanced therapeutic interventions.

The study materials were designed in collaboration with practicing mental health nurses.

Feedback from one student that a link was not accessible.
Recommendation
Review all hyperlinks prior to each week as links at times drop out.
Action Taken
Despite trouble shooting the links, some students experienced difficulties accessing materials via library links that were not easy to remedy. Students were provided with PDFs of materials in these cases.

Students appreciated being able to select their own therapeutic intervention to investigate and practise.
Recommendation
Assessment tasks where possible should allow students to choose their own topic.
