Unit Synopsis

The Recovery movement heralded a paradigm shift in mental health services and is now enshrined in national policy and legislation. Whilst services are adapting to this shift, Recovery has yet to be unanimously adopted. In this unit you will examine how Recovery is conceived and practised adjacent to biopsychosocial treatment. You will have the opportunity to analyse social, cultural and organisational influences that enable the inclusion of Recovery in contemporary treatment. You will also be asked to evaluate an organisational area determine strategies for integration and change.

This is a graded unit: your overall grade will be calculated from the marks or grades for each assessment task, based on the relative weightings shown in the table above. You must obtain an overall mark for the unit of at least 50%, or an overall grade of ‘pass’ in order to pass the unit. If any ‘pass/fail’ tasks are shown in the table above they must also be completed successfully (‘pass’ grade). You must also meet any minimum mark requirements specified for a particular assessment task, as detailed in the ‘assessment task’ section (note that in some instances, the minimum mark for a task may be greater than 50%).

Feedback
Although the assessment tasks received every positive review and were considered appropriate for the learning outcomes of the unit, the length of some assessment tasks were considered too long.
Recommendation
A review of the assessment tasks to be undertaken prior to the next time the unit is offered.
Action Taken
The assessments were changed this term to quizzes, a written assessment and a portfolio. The written assessment was revised and was made clearer. Additional time was spent in Zoom on-line meetings explaining assessment requirements.

The written assessment was a little long winded and lacked clarity.
Recommendation
Make the written assessment clearer. Revise the structure with the team in order to create an assessment that is easy to follow and clear.

On successful completion of this unit, you will be able to:

  1. Explain the history of the consumer movement and the emergence of the recovery paradigm
  2. Analyse the influence of hidden, unconscious and ingrained ideologies that constrain consumer participation
  3. Differentiate between the ideal and the reality in relation to the consumer’s voice in mental health care
  4. Critically evaluate the visibility of consumer participation and the application of recovery in a mental health service.
