General Information

Unit Synopsis

This unit is your first long block professional practice placement and successful completion of these hours will contribute towards your accreditation requirements of completing 1000 professional practice hours. This unit aims to foster a consistent ability to utilise the occupational therapy process when working with clients through integrating and applying academic concepts, professional reasoning and professional behaviours that meet ethical and legal responsibilities within a client centred approach. Professional placements will include a variety of settings and client groups and you may also be required to undertake professional practice placements away from your home town at your own expense. Placement opportunities will vary in start and finish dates and it is important to plan on being available for placement from the end of Term 1 until 31 December of the same year. Additionally you will participate in a compulsory residential which will include research focused seminars, workshops, library activities, and small group activities with an academic supervisor linked to this unit. You will complete Part 1 of your Evidence Review in a small group, on a research topic negotiated with your academic supervisor.

Important note: Students enrolled in a subsequent unit who failed their pre-requisite unit, should drop the subsequent unit before the census date or within 10 working days of Fail grade notification. Students who do not drop the unit in this timeframe cannot later drop the unit without academic and financial liability. Attendance Requirements

All on-campus students are expected to attend scheduled classes – in some units, these classes are identified as a mandatory (pass/fail) component and attendance is compulsory. International students, on a student visa, must maintain a full time study load and meet both attendance and academic progress requirements in each study period (satisfactory attendance for International students is defined as maintaining at least an 80% attendance record).

Each 12-credit Undergraduate unit at CQUniversity requires an overall time commitment of an average of 25 hours of study per week, making a total of 300 hours for the unit.

This is a graded unit: your overall grade will be calculated from the marks or grades for each assessment task, based on the relative weightings shown in the table above. You must obtain an overall mark for the unit of at least 50%, or an overall grade of ‘pass’ in order to pass the unit. If any ‘pass/fail’ tasks are shown in the table above they must also be completed successfully (‘pass’ grade). You must also meet any minimum mark requirements specified for a particular assessment task, as detailed in the ‘assessment task’ section (note that in some instances, the minimum mark for a task may be greater than 50%).

Feedback
Students have identified that being familiar with the assessment tool for professional practice i.e. Student Practice Evaluation Form - Revised (SPEF-R) positively impacts on professional practice outcomes.
Recommendation
Enhance pre placement intensive learning activities to ensure all students are familiar with how to best use the professional practice assessment tool, Student Practice Evaluation Form - Revised (SPEF-R) to support positive professional practice outcomes.
Action Taken
Additional time and activities were allocated through the pre-placement intensive to assist students with both understanding the Student Practice Evaluation Form - Revised (SPEF-R) and using it practically whilst on placement to enhance learning.

Feedback
Some students have found it difficult to articulate their professional reasoning during professional practice to their professional educators.
Recommendation
Continue to offer the professional reasoning workshop during the pre placement intensive, providing students with scenarios to practice articulating their professional reasoning in a range of clinical areas.
Action Taken
Students attended the pre-placement intensive professional reasoning workshop and these resources remained available through the unit Moodle page for students to continue to access whilst on placement.

Feedback
Students attend a number of sessions in Term 1 to prepare them for their Term 2 practice education experiences. This is known as their 'intensive'. Students identified that information in the intensive requirements would have been beneficial earlier in Term 1 to assist with planning.
Recommendation
It is recommended that the students are provided with the intensive timetable by the beginning of Term 1 to assist with planning across this term.

Feedback
Students have identified that additional supports to understand what is expected of them whilst on placement would be beneficial.
Recommendation
It is recommended that the unit Moodle page be updated to include an example week by week list of expectations for the duration of the professional practice placement.

Unit learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, you will be able to:

  1. Utilise the occupational therapy process when working with clients
  2. Apply sound professional reasoning within a client-centered practice approach
  3. Demonstrate professional behaviour that meets ethical and legal responsibilities
  4. Maintain an e-portfolio which contains descriptions of critical learning experiences during professional practice and additional analysis of learning seminar topics
  5. Demonstrate skills in preparing an Evidence Review related to a specific area of professional practice.

The inclusion of an Evidence Review (completed in two parts) assists us to meet external accreditation requirements, as students are required to learn and apply research and Evidence Based Practice (EBP) skills across the curriculum.
