OCCT14002 - Transitions to Occupational Therapy Practice

General Information

Unit Synopsis

This course builds upon the foundation knowledge and practice experience of students in throughout the occupational therapy (OT) program. The focus of this course is to equip students for autonomous practice in regional Australia. It comprises of various modules which will be offered to students to advance their professional skills for independent practice. Each module will run for 3 weeks and include immersion in a specialised area of clinical practice. Students will complete a total of 4 modules over the term. The range of topics will be subject to availability of experts to contribute and resources.

Important note: Students enrolled in a subsequent unit who failed their pre-requisite unit, should drop the subsequent unit before the census date or within 10 working days of Fail grade notification. Students who do not drop the unit in this timeframe cannot later drop the unit without academic and financial liability. Attendance Requirements

All on-campus students are expected to attend scheduled classes – in some units, these classes are identified as a mandatory (pass/fail) component and attendance is compulsory. International students, on a student visa, must maintain a full time study load and meet both attendance and academic progress requirements in each study period (satisfactory attendance for International students is defined as maintaining at least an 80% attendance record).

Each 6-credit Undergraduate unit at CQUniversity requires an overall time commitment of an average of 12.5 hours of study per week, making a total of 150 hours for the unit.

This is a graded unit: your overall grade will be calculated from the marks or grades for each assessment task, based on the relative weightings shown in the table above. You must obtain an overall mark for the unit of at least 50%, or an overall grade of ‘pass’ in order to pass the unit. If any ‘pass/fail’ tasks are shown in the table above they must also be completed successfully (‘pass’ grade). You must also meet any minimum mark requirements specified for a particular assessment task, as detailed in the ‘assessment task’ section (note that in some instances, the minimum mark for a task may be greater than 50%).

Feedback, Recommendations and Responses

Every unit is reviewed for enhancement each year. At the most recent review, the following staff and student feedback items were identified and recommendations were made.

Feedback
Students felt well-supported by the structure of the unit and their interactions with the unit coordinator.
Recommendation
It is recommended that the unit retain a similar structure based around intensive modules and unit coordinator consultation, rather than the standard lecture/tutorial model.
Action Taken
The structure remained similar to previous offerings, with the retention of the three existing specialist modules. Removal of the research content allowed for the addition of two other specialist modules.

Feedback
Students found the specialist modules to be useful and stimulating but have also identified further areas of clinical specialty that would be useful to include.
Recommendation
It is recommended that further clinical specialist modules be developed for this unit, e.g., advanced paediatric skills, hand therapy/advanced orthotics.
Action Taken
The CB84 academic team planning days in 2021 and 2022 allowed for preparation of a new Paediatrics module to include this year. The Motivational Interviewing Module from OCCT14003 was adapted and moved into OCCT14002 as part of the CB84 curriculum change.

Feedback
Students who provided feedback have asked that content in a couple of the specialist modules (dementia and home assessment/modifications) be reviewed to ensure only new information is presented rather than a review of content from previous units.
Recommendation
It is recommended that the unit coordinator ask the specialist presenters of those modules to check content to ensure revision of material taught earlier in CB84 is minimised, allowing for more time to be spent on the new, graduate-level content.

Feedback
Students would like even more rehearsal with interventions and practical applications across some modules.
Recommendation
It is recommended that opportunities to apply interventions to case scenarios be highlighted by the educators in the specialist modules.
