OCHS13016 - Occupational Health, Hygiene and Toxicology

General Information

Unit Synopsis

This course allows for a learner to gain an understanding of a range of occupational hygiene hazards in the workplace, including the long term adverse effects of exposure, the assessment of physical, chemical and biological hazards utilising scientific equipment and methodologies as well as control considerations and methods. Areas covered include identification of occupational hygiene hazards, sampling and analytical techniques and equipment, fitness for work, health surveillance, the concepts of biological monitoring and biological exposure indices, their relationship to occupational exposure standards and the concept of dose. Relevant legislative and guidance standards as they relate to occupational health, hygiene and toxicology will be identified to provide learners with options for hazard evaluation and control. It is a requirement of this course to have access to the CQU website and the internet.

Attendance Requirements

All on-campus students are expected to attend scheduled classes – in some units, these classes are identified as a mandatory (pass/fail) component and attendance is compulsory. International students, on a student visa, must maintain a full time study load and meet both attendance and academic progress requirements in each study period (satisfactory attendance for International students is defined as maintaining at least an 80% attendance record).

Assessment Overview

Recommended Student Time Commitment

Each 6-credit Undergraduate unit at CQUniversity requires an overall time commitment of an average of 12.5 hours of study per week, making a total of 150 hours for the unit.

Assessment Tasks

Assessment Task Weighting
1. Written Assessment 10%
2. Written Assessment 30%
3. Group Work 30%
4. Examination 30%

This is a graded unit: your overall grade will be calculated from the marks or grades for each assessment task, based on the relative weightings shown in the table above. You must obtain an overall mark for the unit of at least 50%, or an overall grade of ‘pass’ in order to pass the unit. If any ‘pass/fail’ tasks are shown in the table above they must also be completed successfully (‘pass’ grade). You must also meet any minimum mark requirements specified for a particular assessment task, as detailed in the ‘assessment task’ section (note that in some instances, the minimum mark for a task may be greater than 50%).

  2. identify categories of occupational disease and factors that contribute to their occurrence (Assignments 2 and 3)
  3. discuss the principles of occupational toxicology (Assignment 2)
  4. apply knowledge of the biological exposure indices, related concepts and occupational exposure standards to specific situations within the workplace (Assignments 2, 3 and 4)
  5. identify occupational hygiene hazards and describe their mechanism of action in selected workplaces (Assignments 2 and 3)
  6. identify techniques for monitoring occupational hygiene hazards in the workplace (Assignments 2 and 3)
