ORAL12002 - Oral Health Pre Clinical Practice 1

General Information

Unit Synopsis

In ORAL12002 you will complete simulation exercises in dental hygiene and restorative dentistry in a safe environment. This unit provides you with pre-clinical experience in workplace health and safety, equipment maintenance, ergonomics and record management. You will learn to apply knowledge and demonstrate clinical judgment skills in the prevention and management of dental caries (including root caries) and periodontal disease in the adult patient. You will develop skills in the communication of information regarding oral health to patients and health professionals in oral and written forms utilising appropriate interpersonal / team communication skills, professional attitudes and ethical behaviours.

Important note: Students enrolled in a subsequent unit who failed their pre-requisite unit, should drop the subsequent unit before the census date or within 10 working days of Fail grade notification. Students who do not drop the unit in this timeframe cannot later drop the unit without academic and financial liability. Attendance Requirements

All on-campus students are expected to attend scheduled classes – in some units, these classes are identified as a mandatory (pass/fail) component and attendance is compulsory. International students, on a student visa, must maintain a full time study load and meet both attendance and academic progress requirements in each study period (satisfactory attendance for International students is defined as maintaining at least an 80% attendance record).

Each 6-credit Undergraduate unit at CQUniversity requires an overall time commitment of an average of 12.5 hours of study per week, making a total of 150 hours for the unit.

This is a graded unit: your overall grade will be calculated from the marks or grades for each assessment task, based on the relative weightings shown in the table above. You must obtain an overall mark for the unit of at least 50%, or an overall grade of ‘pass’ in order to pass the unit. If any ‘pass/fail’ tasks are shown in the table above they must also be completed successfully (‘pass’ grade). You must also meet any minimum mark requirements specified for a particular assessment task, as detailed in the ‘assessment task’ section (note that in some instances, the minimum mark for a task may be greater than 50%).

Students suggested catch up sessions due to sessions missed for public holidays.
Recommendation
The simulation sessions are scheduled over the whole term, taking public holidays into account. Therefore, catch-up sessions as such are not needed and are taken into account when formulating the term program.

Unit learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, you will be able to:

  1. Comply with workplace health and safety, equipment maintenance, ergonomic and record management schedules and policies.
  2. Demonstrate clinical judgment skills in the diagnosis, prevention and management of dental caries and periodontal diseases with competent clinical skills in dental hygiene, local anaesthesia, dental radiography and restorative dentistry and the communication of information regarding oral health to patients and health professionals in oral and written forms.
  3. Utilise clinical judgment skills to perform an examination, medical and dental history taking, risk assessment and referral for complex care outside an Oral Health Therapists' scope of practice for adult patients.
  4. Satisfy the requirements of a competent dental practitioner in dental hygiene practice, diagnostic dental radiography and restorative dentistry based on and evidence-based practice.
  5. Satisfy the requirements of an evolving dental practitioner utilising appropriate interpersonal / team communication skills, professional attitudes and ethical behaviours.
