ORAL12002 - Oral Health Pre Clinical Practice 1

General Information

Unit Synopsis

In this unit you will gain theoretical knowledge in dental materials, restorative procedures, radiation safety and radiographic imaging procedures. You will also translate and integrate this knowledge in a simulated environment while fulfilling workplace health and safety, equipment maintenance and record management requirements. On successful completion of this unit, you will be able to demonstrate practical skills in dental restorations in adults of all ages. You will also be able to take both intra-oral and extra-oral radiographs safely and competently in a simulated environment. You will be able to communicate information regarding oral health in oral and written forms utilising appropriate interpersonal / team communication skills, professional attitudes and ethical behaviours.

Important note: Students enrolled in a subsequent unit who failed their pre-requisite unit, should drop the subsequent unit before the census date or within 10 working days of Fail grade notification. Students who do not drop the unit in this timeframe cannot later drop the unit without academic and financial liability. Attendance Requirements

All on-campus students are expected to attend scheduled classes – in some units, these classes are identified as a mandatory (pass/fail) component and attendance is compulsory. International students, on a student visa, must maintain a full time study load and meet both attendance and academic progress requirements in each study period (satisfactory attendance for International students is defined as maintaining at least an 80% attendance record).

Each 6-credit Undergraduate unit at CQUniversity requires an overall time commitment of an average of 12.5 hours of study per week, making a total of 150 hours for the unit.

This is a graded unit: your overall grade will be calculated from the marks or grades for each assessment task, based on the relative weightings shown in the table above. You must obtain an overall mark for the unit of at least 50%, or an overall grade of ‘pass’ in order to pass the unit. If any ‘pass/fail’ tasks are shown in the table above they must also be completed successfully (‘pass’ grade). You must also meet any minimum mark requirements specified for a particular assessment task, as detailed in the ‘assessment task’ section (note that in some instances, the minimum mark for a task may be greater than 50%).

Every unit is reviewed for enhancement each year. At the most recent review, the following staff and student feedback items were identified and recommendations were made.

Feedback
It was suggested that radiography could have been placed during the intensive weeks, to make it easier to transition into clinic, as well as lessening stress towards the end of term.
Recommendation
As part of a course review, the radiography component has been moved from ORAL12002 to ORAL11001 and so will no longer be offered in ORAL12002 from 2023.
Action Taken
Radiography is no longer a component of ORAL12002 from 2023.

Feedback
Students raised some concerns regarding different educator's having differing expectations in the simulation sessions.
Recommendation
It is recommended that the unit coordinator provide additional detail in the simulation sessions content to enable more consistency between educators.

Feedback
Students felt the dental materials group assignment was not a beneficial assessment. Feedback has been sought from the cohort to improve this assessment for 2024. 
Recommendation
It is recommended that the unit coordinator review the dental materials learning content and group assignment for 2024 to make it a more meaningful learning activity.

Feedback
The newly developed local anaesthetic tutorials were well received by students, who commented they found them an enjoyable and helpful learning experience.
Recommendation
It is recommended that the local anaesthetic tutorials continue.

Unit learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, you will be able to:

  1. Discuss the theoretical basis of dental materials and restorative procedures in the management of oral diseases
  2. Apply the principles of radiation biology and protection when producing diagnostic intra-oral and extra-oral radiographic images
  3. Apply knowledge and skills of dental materials and cavity preparation for dental restorations in the simulated environment
  4. Recognise and act upon the legal, ethical and safeguarding issues involving dental practitioners and patients as defined by the relevant professional regulatory bodies in Australia and overseas.

All unit profiles in the Bachelor of Oral Health are made available to the Australian Dental Council for on-going accreditation purposes.
