ORAL12003 - Oral Health Clinical Practice 1

General Information

Unit Synopsis

In this course students are able to translate knowledge and skills learnt in the pre-clinical setting within ORAL12002 Oral Health Pre-Clinical Practice 1 into the clinical setting through work-integrated learning within ORAL12003 Oral Health Clinical Practice 1. Students must comply with clinical policies and procedures (workplace health and safety, infection control and dental records), and undertake clinical practice with peer-on-peer learning in Weeks 1-6 and then with patients in Weeks 7-12. On completion of this course, students should be able to demonstrate clinical judgment skills in dental examination, medical and dental history taking, risk assessment, referral for complex care, diagnosis, prevention and management of dental caries (including root caries) and periodontal diseases for child and adult patients. Students should also be able to demonstrate proficiency in extra-oral and intra-oral radiology; in the knowledge and practical skills relating to pain management and administration of local anaesthesia for child and adult patients. Students will also be able to demonstrate skills in take-home and in-office teeth whitening treatments, impression-taking, and the fabrication of study models, mouthguards, and trays for whitening and preventive medicaments. Lastly, students will be able to communicate information regarding oral health in oral and written forms utilising appropriate interpersonal / team communication skills, professional attitudes and ethical behaviours.

Important note: Students enrolled in a subsequent unit who failed their pre-requisite unit, should drop the subsequent unit before the census date or within 10 working days of Fail grade notification. Students who do not drop the unit in this timeframe cannot later drop the unit without academic and financial liability. Attendance Requirements

All on-campus students are expected to attend scheduled classes – in some units, these classes are identified as a mandatory (pass/fail) component and attendance is compulsory. International students, on a student visa, must maintain a full time study load and meet both attendance and academic progress requirements in each study period (satisfactory attendance for International students is defined as maintaining at least an 80% attendance record).

Each 6-credit Undergraduate unit at CQUniversity requires an overall time commitment of an average of 12.5 hours of study per week, making a total of 150 hours for the unit.

This is a graded unit: your overall grade will be calculated from the marks or grades for each assessment task, based on the relative weightings shown in the table above. You must obtain an overall mark for the unit of at least 50%, or an overall grade of ‘pass’ in order to pass the unit. If any ‘pass/fail’ tasks are shown in the table above they must also be completed successfully (‘pass’ grade). You must also meet any minimum mark requirements specified for a particular assessment task, as detailed in the ‘assessment task’ section (note that in some instances, the minimum mark for a task may be greater than 50%).

It has been suggested that the in-class test be changed from multi-station questions to a standard in-class examination format.

Feedback
Students indicated the high intensity of the course made it difficult to keep up with content. In addition, the transition from simulation to real patients is difficult.
Recommendation
It is recommended that additional learning resources be developed to use in online modules and practical tutorials to assist students in consolidating their knowledge.

Some students found the pre-recorded lectures confusing at times as well as difficult to hear.

It is recommended that lectures be reviewed and redeveloped. It is also recommended to upload the recordings into Echo360.

Unit learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, you will be able to:

  1. Demonstrate clinical judgment skills in dental examination, medical and dental history taking, risk assessment, and the diagnosis, prevention and management of dental caries and periodontal diseases for child and adult patients.
  2. Demonstrate proficiency in extra-oral and intra-oral radiology including compliance with clinical policies and procedures (workplace health and safety, infection control and dental records).
  3. Demonstrate knowledge and practical skills in pain management and the administration of local anaesthesia for child and adult patients.
  4. Demonstrate clinical judgment skills in the diagnosis, prevention and management of dental caries (including root caries) and periodontal diseases, and the identification of patients who require referral for complex care outside one's scope of practice.
  5. Demonstrate skills in impression-taking, and in the fabrication of study models, mouthguards, and trays for whitening and preventative medicaments.
  6. Demonstrate skills in take-home and in-office teeth whitening treatments.
  7. Communicate information regarding oral health in oral and written formats.
  8. Satisfy the requirements of an evolving dental practitioner utilising appropriate interpersonal / team communication skills, professional attitudes and ethical behaviours.
