ORAL12005 - Oral Health Pre Clinical Practice 2

General Information

Unit Synopsis

This unit, which is a sequel to ORAL12002 Oral Health Pre-Clinical Practice 1, reinforces skills learnt previously as well as developing new restorative skills and techniques in the primary dentition. You will apply knowledge and demonstrate skills in the preventive and operative management of dental caries including extractions, pulpotomies, stainless steel crowns and strip crowns in the primary dentition. On completion of this unit, you will demonstrate proficiency in the administration of local anaesthesia for child and adult patients. You will communicate information regarding oral health in oral and written forms in terms of relevant interpersonal / team communication skills, professional attitudes and ethical behaviours.

Important note: Students enrolled in a subsequent unit who failed their pre-requisite unit, should drop the subsequent unit before the census date or within 10 working days of Fail grade notification. Students who do not drop the unit in this timeframe cannot later drop the unit without academic and financial liability. Attendance Requirements

All on-campus students are expected to attend scheduled classes – in some units, these classes are identified as a mandatory (pass/fail) component and attendance is compulsory. International students, on a student visa, must maintain a full time study load and meet both attendance and academic progress requirements in each study period (satisfactory attendance for International students is defined as maintaining at least an 80% attendance record).

Each 6-credit Undergraduate unit at CQUniversity requires an overall time commitment of an average of 12.5 hours of study per week, making a total of 150 hours for the unit.

This is a graded unit: your overall grade will be calculated from the marks or grades for each assessment task, based on the relative weightings shown in the table above. You must obtain an overall mark for the unit of at least 50%, or an overall grade of ‘pass’ in order to pass the unit. If any ‘pass/fail’ tasks are shown in the table above they must also be completed successfully (‘pass’ grade). You must also meet any minimum mark requirements specified for a particular assessment task, as detailed in the ‘assessment task’ section (note that in some instances, the minimum mark for a task may be greater than 50%).

Feedback
The students found that some guest lecturers' information was inconsistent with internal lecturers.
Recommendation
It is recommended that the unit coordinator communicate and collaborate with guest lecturers to ensure consistency of messaging for students.
Action Taken
The unit coordinator reviewed the guest lecturer content and reduced the number of guest lectures. The unit coordinator collaborated with the remaining guest lecturers to ensure consistency of messaging for students.

Feedback
Students felt more time spent on silver fluoride, pulpotomies and extractions would be beneficial.
Recommendation
It is recommended that the unit coordinator review the simulation laboratory schedule to ensure adequate time is spent on the range of procedures needed to be taught in this unit.

On successful completion of this unit, you will be able to:

  3. Understand the underlying principles of and perform the administration of local anaesthetic for child and adult patients
  4. Communicate information regarding oral health in oral and written forms
  5. Demonstrate the interpersonal and team communication skills, professional attitudes and ethical behaviours of an evolving dental practitioner.
