ORAL13001 - Oral Health Clinical Placement 1

General Information

Unit Synopsis

This capstone course will provide students with the integration of knowledge, skills and professional experience of clinical work in a dental surgery in preparation for employment as an oral health therapist. Students will be exposed to a real work environment where they will be able to demonstrate competence in total patient care over a range of clinical preventive and operative procedures with patients within the scope of practice of an oral health therapist. Reflective and self directed learning will improve student?s ability as a clinician within their scope of practice in a supportive and confidence- building environment. Lastly, students will be able to communicate oral health in oral and written formats in terms of relevant interpersonal/team communication skills and professional attitudes/behaviours.

Attendance Requirements

All on-campus students are expected to attend scheduled classes – in some units, these classes are identified as a mandatory (pass/fail) component and attendance is compulsory. International students, on a student visa, must maintain a full time study load and meet both attendance and academic progress requirements in each study period (satisfactory attendance for International students is defined as maintaining at least an 80% attendance record).

Each 18-credit Undergraduate unit at CQUniversity requires an overall time commitment of an average of 37.5 hours of study per week, making a total of 450 hours for the unit.

Assessment Task Weighting

This is a graded unit: your overall grade will be calculated from the marks or grades for each assessment task, based on the relative weightings shown in the table above. You must obtain an overall mark for the unit of at least 50%, or an overall grade of ‘pass’ in order to pass the unit. If any ‘pass/fail’ tasks are shown in the table above they must also be completed successfully (‘pass’ grade). You must also meet any minimum mark requirements specified for a particular assessment task, as detailed in the ‘assessment task’ section (note that in some instances, the minimum mark for a task may be greater than 50%).

Feedback
Feedback about in-class test results via an online session would have been helpful to further knowledge about areas needing improvement.
Recommendation
It is recommended to run feedback sessions online after the closing of the in-class tests throughout the term.
Action Taken
A group feedback session was conducted in the weekly yarning circle after the quiz was marked. Students were also offered individual quiz review meetings with the unit coordinator on request, however few attended.

Student feedback indicated appreciation to the teaching team for managing late changes to clinical placements.
Recommendation
It is recommended to maintain clear standard operating procedure on student absences and student rostering.

Feedback
Guest lecturers were excellent, a good opportunity to hear from specialists in their field.
Recommendation
It is recommended that the scheduling of guest lecturers who are specialists in their field continue.

The unit has been set out well to recap the content that a clinician needs to be aware of. Teachers are supportive, and the unit layout indicates teachers' efforts to improve this unit over the years.

It is recommended that the teaching team continue to be supportive.

Feedback
Students enjoyed learning and reading the week's content. However, students reported that two evening online sessions a week and 4 full days a week at clinical placement for 12 weeks become overwhelming by the end of term. The option to have lectures pre-recorded for independent study would be valuable.
Recommendation
It is recommended lecture and tutorial scheduling be reviewed.
