PBHL20006 - Participatory Health Research

General Information

Unit Synopsis

Participatory Health Research is an approach to research that emphasises community involvement in all aspects of the research, from the initial ideas to the final dissemination of the findings. You will be introduced to and encouraged to critique a range of research approaches, methods and designs in this unit that would be appropriate to traditional research but which can be adapted to participatory health research. You will also be introduced to anti-oppressive methodologies, including feminist, decolonising and art-based approaches to research. Taking a participatory approach is important when undertaking research with First Nations Peoples, socially marginalised groups, and those who have experienced oppression. An essential part of undertaking research with these groups is the development of reflexivity and you will be encouraged to reflect on your own position and assumptions towards research and those who are researched.

Attendance Requirements

All on-campus students are expected to attend scheduled classes – in some units, these classes are identified as a mandatory (pass/fail) component and attendance is compulsory. International students, on a student visa, must maintain a full time study load and meet both attendance and academic progress requirements in each study period (satisfactory attendance for International students is defined as maintaining at least an 80% attendance record).

Assessment Overview

Recommended Student Time Commitment

Each 6-credit Postgraduate unit at CQUniversity requires an overall time commitment of an average of 12.5 hours of study per week, making a total of 150 hours for the unit.

Assessment Tasks

Assessment Task Weighting
1. Online discussion forum 20%

Source: Email from Wil Alderton, AVP and Chair, Campus Life Committee, Melbourne campus
Feedback
In response to ideas generated from Assessment 3: "...it’s brilliant. I’m all for encouraging student ideas and bringing these to fruition, and I agree the solutions are (mostly) actionable."
Recommendation
Continue to work with stakeholders to define project topics and trial ideas generated from student projects.
Action Taken
Worked with CQU Wellbeing Services and Campus Life Committee to generate project topics. Selected students presented project ideas as agenda items for the Campus Life Committee meeting.

Feedback
This unit may be offered to first term MPH students. Assessment 1 requires self-direction, analysis of literature and relational learning. This type of assessment may be new to some students; further support may be needed.
Recommendation
Provide additional resource links such as ALC Communication website and a recorded presentation to exemplify the requirements of Assessment 1.
Action Taken
Assessment instructions and exemplars were included in the Moodle. Links to ALC as well as the library were provided on the Moodle site. Assessment one requirements were explicitly discussed during tutorials. Students also demonstrated their ability to share their article and develop a haiku during tutorial sessions. In subsequent tutorials, students provided their own insights to other haikus.
