PERF12017 - Performance and Production Studies 4

General Information

Unit Synopsis

Building on the learning objectives of Performance and Production Studies 3, through intermediate studies in ensemble music performance and/or theatre performance students should be able to synthesize their specialised performance skills within the context of publicly presented music and/or theatre ensemble performances. These music and/or theatre ensemble activities give students the opportunity to work in various performance, technical and creative roles as appropriate so that they have the opportunity to develop intermediate skills in problem-solving, creative, self-regulated and critical thinking, within a team-based environment. Students enrolled in the Music Theatre, Drama and Technical Theatre specialisations will also undertake studies in sound for the theatre, including the physical components of the sound system, sound reinforcement, sound recording and sound design for the theatre. Students enrolled in the BMusic may also undertake intermediate studies in artistic direction, ensemble coordination, event management and arts business.

Important note: Students enrolled in a subsequent unit who failed their pre-requisite unit, should drop the subsequent unit before the census date or within 10 working days of Fail grade notification. Students who do not drop the unit in this timeframe cannot later drop the unit without academic and financial liability. Attendance Requirements

All on-campus students are expected to attend scheduled classes – in some units, these classes are identified as a mandatory (pass/fail) component and attendance is compulsory. International students, on a student visa, must maintain a full time study load and meet both attendance and academic progress requirements in each study period (satisfactory attendance for International students is defined as maintaining at least an 80% attendance record).

Each 6-credit Undergraduate unit at CQUniversity requires an overall time commitment of an average of 12.5 hours of study per week, making a total of 150 hours for the unit.

This is a graded unit: your overall grade will be calculated from the marks or grades for each assessment task, based on the relative weightings shown in the table above. You must obtain an overall mark for the unit of at least 50%, or an overall grade of ‘pass’ in order to pass the unit. If any ‘pass/fail’ tasks are shown in the table above they must also be completed successfully (‘pass’ grade). You must also meet any minimum mark requirements specified for a particular assessment task, as detailed in the ‘assessment task’ section (note that in some instances, the minimum mark for a task may be greater than 50%).

Unit learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, you will be able to:

  1. Participate and take responsibility for own and cooperate to develop outputs with others in teamwork in both performance and non-performance aspects of the music and theatre activities in this course;
  2. Demonstrate problem solving skills where solution are sought from unpredictable challenges in both performance and non-performance aspects of the music and theatre activities in this course;
  3. Perform more defined tasks that enhance modeling professionalism in rehearsal and performance situations and a demonstrable ability to work independently in the preparation of material for rehearsals and performance;
  4. Integrating creative, critical and self-regulated thinking as applied to various performance, technical and creative roles;
  5. Interpreting the stylistic, historical and interpretive requirements of the music and theatre repertoire chosen for this course;
  6. Execute various performance and technical roles competently in public performance, including aspects of technical competency, group interaction, sensitivity, musicality and creativity.
  7. Demonstrate broader theoretical knowledge with substantial depth in some areas on the professional organizational, management and business skills to music ensemble performance activities and events;
  8. Perform with greater proficiency in the music ensemble techniques covered in this course pertinent to their specialization;
  9. Identify and demonstrate an understanding of the various components of a sound system;
  10. Gain practical experience in recording and playback;
  11. Gain experience in creating a sound design for a specific project.
