PERF13019 - Performance and Production Studies 6

General Information

Unit Synopsis

Building on the learning objectives of Performance and Production Studies 5, through advanced studies in ensemble music performance and/or theatre performance students should be able to synthesize their specialised performance skills within the context of publicly presented music and/or theatre ensemble performances. These music and/or theatre ensemble activities give students the opportunity to work in various performance, technical and creative roles as appropriate so that they have the opportunity to develop advanced skills in problem-solving, creative, self-regulated and critical thinking, within a team-based environment. Students enrolled in the Music Theatre, Drama and Technical Theatre specialisations will also undertake studies in directing for the stage from historical, theoretical and practical perspectives. Students enrolled in the BMusic may also undertake advanced studies in artistic direction, ensemble coordination, event management and arts business.

Important note: Students enrolled in a subsequent unit who failed their pre-requisite unit, should drop the subsequent unit before the census date or within 10 working days of Fail grade notification. Students who do not drop the unit in this timeframe cannot later drop the unit without academic and financial liability. Attendance Requirements

All on-campus students are expected to attend scheduled classes – in some units, these classes are identified as a mandatory (pass/fail) component and attendance is compulsory. International students, on a student visa, must maintain a full time study load and meet both attendance and academic progress requirements in each study period (satisfactory attendance for International students is defined as maintaining at least an 80% attendance record).

Recommended Student Time Commitment

Each 6-credit Undergraduate unit at CQUniversity requires an overall time commitment of an average of 12.5 hours of study per week, making a total of 150 hours for the unit.

This is a graded unit: your overall grade will be calculated from the marks or grades for each assessment task, based on the relative weightings shown in the table above. You must obtain an overall mark for the unit of at least 50%, or an overall grade of ‘pass’ in order to pass the unit. If any ‘pass/fail’ tasks are shown in the table above they must also be completed successfully (‘pass’ grade). You must also meet any minimum mark requirements specified for a particular assessment task, as detailed in the ‘assessment task’ section (note that in some instances, the minimum mark for a task may be greater than 50%).

Challenging and rewarding repertoire
Recommendation
Students commented positively regarding the repertoire selected by staff for various ensembles and projects. Staff will continue to ensure appropriate repertoire is selected based on curriculum and operational needs of the unit.
Action Taken
The thoughtful selection of repertoire and guest artists continue to challenge and inspire the students enrolled in this unit.

Students enjoyed the challenge and results of the production assessment. This is very beneficial in their development and will continue in these Performance and Production Studies units.

On successful completion of this unit, you will be able to:

  1. Demonstrate high level teamwork and in taking responsibility for self and others in both performance and non-performance aspects of the music and theatre activities in this course;
  2. Execute judgment required in high level problem-solving in both performance and non-performance aspects of the music and theatre activities in this course;
  3. Role model to peers and others the professionalism required in rehearsal and performance situations and a proficiency to work independently in the preparation of material for rehearsals and performance;
  4. Apply the creative, critical and self-regulated thinking to various performance, technical and creative roles;
  5. Apply the stylistic, historical and interpretive requirements of the music and theatre repertoire to performance and non-performance aspects of the music and theatre activities in this course;
  6. Execute with great proficiency various performance and technical roles in public performance, including aspects of technical competency, group interaction, sensitivity, musicality and creativity.
  7. Demonstrate specialised knowledge of professional organizational, management and business skills to music ensemble performance activities and events;
  8. Perform with high levels of proficiency, in the music ensemble techniques covered in this course pertinent to their specialization;
  9. Examine the historical development of the director's role and key figures in that development;
  10. Demonstrate the process of directing for the theatre;
  11. Gain practical experience in directing students for various projects.
