General Information

Unit Synopsis

Students will develop essential clinical knowledge and understanding of trauma care in paramedic practice through investigation of specific cases such as head, chest, abdominal, genitourinary, pelvic, spinal, maxillofacial and extremity based injuries. A component of this course will also establish the appropriate management and treatment plan of serious trauma patients. Knowledge and skills will be developed through a series of coursework exercises. Distance education (FLEX) students will be required to have access to a computer to make frequent use of internet resources and to attend a residential school on Rockhampton campus to promote development of course learning outcomes.

Attendance Requirements

All on-campus students are expected to attend scheduled classes – in some units, these classes are identified as a mandatory (pass/fail) component and attendance is compulsory. International students, on a student visa, must maintain a full time study load and meet both attendance and academic progress requirements in each study period (satisfactory attendance for International students is defined as maintaining at least an 80% attendance record).

Assessment Overview

Recommended Student Time Commitment

Each 6-credit Undergraduate unit at CQUniversity requires an overall time commitment of an average of 12.5 hours of study per week, making a total of 150 hours for the unit.

Assessment Tasks

Assessment Task Weighting
1. Written Assessment 40%
2. Online Quiz(zes) 40%
3. Presentation 20%

This is a graded unit: your overall grade will be calculated from the marks or grades for each assessment task, based on the relative weightings shown in the table above. You must obtain an overall mark for the unit of at least 50%, or an overall grade of ‘pass’ in order to pass the unit. If any ‘pass/fail’ tasks are shown in the table above they must also be completed successfully (‘pass’ grade). You must also meet any minimum mark requirements specified for a particular assessment task, as detailed in the ‘assessment task’ section (note that in some instances, the minimum mark for a task may be greater than 50%).

Feedback, Recommendations and Responses

Every unit is reviewed for enhancement each year. At the most recent review, the following staff and student feedback items were identified and recommendations were made.

Source: Student Feeback
Feedback
Students preferred the way in which residential school (trauma week) was conducted (working in teams of two rather than large groups. Whilst scheduled to provide breaks between assessment or practice scenarios some students would have preferred a block approach to scheduling.
Recommendation
Course Coordinator to raise as agenda item for team discussion at Discipline meeting. Potential rescheduling possible.
Action Taken
Nil.
Source: Course Coordinator Observation Student Feedback Industry Feedback from those interacting with students undertaking early employment.
Feedback
Volume of Assessment over Term 2 of third year in general of which this course is a major contributor
Recommendation
Course Coordinators for Term 2 third year courses undertake a review of assessment with a view to reducing the number of summative assessments students undertake. Further to this Course Coordinators should review scheduling of course assessment with a view to minimising the impact of early employment on study workload.
Action Taken
