PMSC20005 - Advanced Assessment, Diagnostic Interpretation and Management

General Information

Unit Synopsis

On completion of this unit students will have an advanced level of knowledge to relate cardiovascular, neurological, endocrine and respiratory physiology and pathophysiology to advanced clinical diagnostic tests of cardiovascular, respiratory, endocrine and neurological function. Students will have an advanced level of knowledge for point-of-care testing (POCT) including ultrasound in the prehospital environment. Students will relate POCT and its effectiveness in the prehospital field in triaging patients to appropriate medical facilities and early interventional care. All diagnostic and assessment measurements will assist the paramedic to form a working diagnose and effective management plan.

Attendance Requirements

All on-campus students are expected to attend scheduled classes – in some units, these classes are identified as a mandatory (pass/fail) component and attendance is compulsory. International students, on a student visa, must maintain a full time study load and meet both attendance and academic progress requirements in each study period (satisfactory attendance for International students is defined as maintaining at least an 80% attendance record).

Assessment Overview

Recommended Student Time Commitment

Each 6-credit Postgraduate unit at CQUniversity requires an overall time commitment of an average of 12.5 hours of study per week, making a total of 150 hours for the unit.

Assessment Tasks

Assessment Task Weighting
1. Written Assessment 30%
2. On-campus Activity 50%
3. Online Quiz(zes) 20%

This is a graded unit: your overall grade will be calculated from the marks or grades for each assessment task, based on the relative weightings shown in the table above. You must obtain an overall mark for the unit of at least 50%, or an overall grade of ‘pass’ in order to pass the unit. If any ‘pass/fail’ tasks are shown in the table above they must also be completed successfully (‘pass’ grade). You must also meet any minimum mark requirements specified for a particular assessment task, as detailed in the ‘assessment task’ section (note that in some instances, the minimum mark for a task may be greater than 50%).

Feedback
Coursework scenarios.
Recommendation
Consider how best to engage students in coursework scenarios to demonstrate application of assessments & diagnostics at various points throughout the unit.
Action Taken
This continues to be a work in progress. Optional scenarios are provided for students to consider at various points throughout the unit, though engagement remains low. Answers are provided the following week. The students may be engaging in this work offline. The plan is for these scenarios to remain optional.

Unit learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, you will be able to:

  1. Explain at an advanced level the anatomy and physiology of the body systems in relation to medical conditions.
  2. Justify the appropriate use of respiratory, neurological, metabolic, hemodynamic, and electrophysiological clinical measurements in assessing medical conditions.
  3. Relate the pathophysiology and assessment findings to common medical conditions and their management.
  4. Interpret results of the medical measurement tests and describe the underlying pathophysiology of abnormal test results.
  5. Explain the benefits of out-of-hospital adult medical emergency advanced life support and the related role of Critical Care Paramedics.
  6. Investigate and interpret the epidemiology of emergency medical conditions.
  7. Implement evidenced-based practice to management of emergency medical conditions.
  8. Integrate theoretical knowledge and clinical skills to the management of the adult patients with an emergency medical condition in 'real time' work simulation using a clinical problem solving and clinical decision making model.
