PODI12006 - Fundamentals of Pre-Clinical Podiatry Practice

General Information

Unit Synopsis

This course introduces the student to podiatric clinical practice and fundamental concepts required in practice. Students will develop the necessary communication skills required in patient management and will learn to undertake a comprehensive patient history and to conduct a routine podiatric examination. Students will gain knowledge in common dermatopathology of the skin and nails in podiatric practice and commence practical skill development in skin and nail technique. In addition, students will complete 40 hours of external placement as a participant-observer in an allied health clinic involving podiatry.

Attendance Requirements

All on-campus students are expected to attend scheduled classes – in some units, these classes are identified as a mandatory (pass/fail) component and attendance is compulsory. International students, on a student visa, must maintain a full time study load and meet both attendance and academic progress requirements in each study period (satisfactory attendance for International students is defined as maintaining at least an 80% attendance record).

Each 6-credit Undergraduate unit at CQUniversity requires an overall time commitment of an average of 12.5 hours of study per week, making a total of 150 hours for the unit.

This is a graded unit: your overall grade will be calculated from the marks or grades for each assessment task, based on the relative weightings shown in the table above. You must obtain an overall mark for the unit of at least 50%, or an overall grade of ‘pass’ in order to pass the unit. If any ‘pass/fail’ tasks are shown in the table above they must also be completed successfully (‘pass’ grade). You must also meet any minimum mark requirements specified for a particular assessment task, as detailed in the ‘assessment task’ section (note that in some instances, the minimum mark for a task may be greater than 50%).

Feedback, Recommendations and Responses

Every unit is reviewed for enhancement each year. At the most recent review, the following staff and student feedback items were identified and recommendations were made.

Feedback
Zoom breakout rooms were successfully used for tutorial classes to facilitate discussions amongst students and tutors.
Recommendation
Zoom breakout rooms should continue to be used to maintain student engagement during tutorial class and provide a forum for discussion for students to develop their communication skills.

Due to the small student cohort (3) breakout rooms where not used in 2021.

Feedback
Unlike other years, where students had their practical sessions during the term, the conversion of all classes online meant that students were taught all the theoretical components first, before having their practical sessions in a block at the end. It will be interesting to see if students' performance and learning are affected by the 'block practicals' model.
Recommendation
Having practical sessions as a 'block' ensures that students have learnt the full theoretical content before embarking on hands on practical sessions. Students may benefit and if the feedback were positive, future offerings may consider conducting practical sessions in blocks.
Action Taken
In 2021, practical sessions were not conducted in "blocks" but weekly after each lecture and tutorial. It seems that regardless of method of delivery the students still do well.

Feedback
Online lectures and tutorials were successfully conducted with the lecturer in Rockhampton. Practical sessions were taught face to face in the Sydney clinic. Students reported that having the zoom lectures recorded and uploaded to Moodle in a timely manner was helpful for reviewing unit content as their own pace.
Recommendation
It is recommended that lectures continue to be recorded and uploaded to Moodle weekly.

Feedback
One student had issues accessing ECHO360 videos and only informed the unit co-ordinator late in the term, and close to the final assessment date. The student managed to get assistance from TASAC to resolve the issue eventually.
Recommendation
It is recommended that at the commencement of term, students are provided with an orientation to the structure of the unit Moodle site.

Unit learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, you will be able to:

  1. Examine the changing role of the podiatrist and scope of practice in health care provision.
  2. Use appropriate podiatric terminology.
  3. Describe the professional role in relation to its standard policies, codes and guidelines for podiatry practice.
  4. Undertake a basic patient assessment involving medical and social history taking, and physical examination (including dermatological, vascular, neurological and biomechanical assessment) in a simulated environment.
  5. Discriminate between the aetiology, clinical presentation, and treatment strategies for common nail and skin disorders.
  6. Demonstrate manual skills development under supervision involving nail clipper and scalpel technique.
  7. Recognise appropriate use of basic chair side techniques including application of padding and/or strapping.
  8. Demonstrate the use of critical thinking and clinical reasoning as a skill in podiatry practice.
