PSIO12002 - Cardiorespiratory Physiotherapy

General Information

Unit Synopsis

In this unit students will develop knowledge and skills relating to the comprehensive management of clients with acute and chronic cardiorespiratory conditions across the spectrum of health care. Students will use the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF) framework, apply principles of Evidence Based Practice and combine various clinical reasoning strategies. Students will relate the role of the physiotherapist working in a hospital and community care facilities to that of the interprofessional team, family members and carers of clients with cardiorespiratory conditions.

Prerequisites:-

  • PSIO11003 - Foundations of Physiotherapy Practice 2
  • ALLH11004 - Anatomy and Physiology for Health Professionals 2

Important note: Students enrolled in a subsequent unit who failed their pre-requisite unit, should drop the subsequent unit before the census date or within 10 working days of Fail grade notification. Students who do not drop the unit in this timeframe cannot later drop the unit without academic and financial liability. Attendance Requirements

All on-campus students are expected to attend scheduled classes – in some units, these classes are identified as a mandatory (pass/fail) component and attendance is compulsory. International students, on a student visa, must maintain a full time study load and meet both attendance and academic progress requirements in each study period (satisfactory attendance for International students is defined as maintaining at least an 80% attendance record).

Each 6-credit Undergraduate unit at CQUniversity requires an overall time commitment of an average of 12.5 hours of study per week, making a total of 150 hours for the unit.

This is a graded unit: your overall grade will be calculated from the marks or grades for each assessment task, based on the relative weightings shown in the table above. You must obtain an overall mark for the unit of at least 50%, or an overall grade of ‘pass’ in order to pass the unit. If any ‘pass/fail’ tasks are shown in the table above they must also be completed successfully (‘pass’ grade). You must also meet any minimum mark requirements specified for a particular assessment task, as detailed in the ‘assessment task’ section (note that in some instances, the minimum mark for a task may be greater than 50%).

Feedback
Topics in cardiorespiratory are complex and lecture slides were very comprehensive and well structured, however it would be helpful if some information could be cut down.
Recommendation
It is recommended that the teaching team review the content of all lecture slides to ensure the most relevant content is included.
Action Taken
Content of all lectures, Clinical Skills Workbook and the unit Moodle site were reviewed, and adaptations made to ensure that only the most relevant content was included.

More time is needed to be spent on the interpretation of Spirometry.
Recommendation
It is recommended that the clinical practical skills session on Spirometry is restructured to included more cases to help students interpret Spirometry.

Spirometry sessions were adapted, such that students were provided with more time and resources to practice the interpretation of test results.

The structure of the unit is fantastic and the layout of lectures as well. The condensing of information and tutorial support to focus on key information is also extremely well done!

It is recommended that the structure of the unit is maintained and that the open door policy for individual and small group tutorials is maintained.

The additional weekly drop-in tutorials on a Friday really helped to embed knowledge of complex topics.

It is recommended that weekly drop-in tutorials are scheduled on both campuses at a time suitable to the local teaching team.

The video resources are excellent, but a few more related to airway clearance techniques would be useful.

Unit learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, you will be able to:

  1. Discuss the pathological processes, the symptomatology, clinical course, medical and pharmacological management and prognosis in clients with cardiorespiratory conditions.
  2. Assess clients with cardiorespiratory conditions through acute to chronic conditions, and interpret and analyse findings.
  3. Identify how environmental and personal factors affect activity and participation levels of clients with cardiorespiratory conditions.
  4. Develop, implement and evaluate interventions for clients with cardiorespiratory conditions from acute to chronic stages.
  5. Discuss intervention strategies using appropriate evidence from the literature.
  6. Relate the role of the physiotherapist to that of the interprofessional team, family members and carers of clients with cardiorespiratory conditions.
