PSIO13003 - Professional Physiotherapy Practice 2

General Information

Unit Synopsis

The course aims to advance the students’ ability to integrate the knowledge, physical skills, principles of evidence based practice and clinical reasoning, ethical and professional behaviours that are necessary to function competently as a physiotherapist. This will include a variety of settings and patient groups, with an emphasis on effective and patient-centred management plans, within the framework of the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF). The students will undertake a SWOT analysis prior to the start of the clinical placement, and complete a reflective diary.

Important note: Students enrolled in a subsequent unit who failed their pre-requisite unit, should drop the subsequent unit before the census date or within 10 working days of Fail grade notification. Students who do not drop the unit in this timeframe cannot later drop the unit without academic and financial liability. Attendance Requirements

All on-campus students are expected to attend scheduled classes – in some units, these classes are identified as a mandatory (pass/fail) component and attendance is compulsory. International students, on a student visa, must maintain a full time study load and meet both attendance and academic progress requirements in each study period (satisfactory attendance for International students is defined as maintaining at least an 80% attendance record).

Recommended Student Time Commitment

Each 12-credit Undergraduate unit at CQUniversity requires an overall time commitment of an average of 25 hours of study per week, making a total of 300 hours for the unit.

This is a graded unit: your overall grade will be calculated from the marks or grades for each assessment task, based on the relative weightings shown in the table above. You must obtain an overall mark for the unit of at least 50%, or an overall grade of ‘pass’ in order to pass the unit. If any ‘pass/fail’ tasks are shown in the table above they must also be completed successfully (‘pass’ grade). You must also meet any minimum mark requirements specified for a particular assessment task, as detailed in the ‘assessment task’ section (note that in some instances, the minimum mark for a task may be greater than 50%).

The variety of clinical placements and accommodation of locations to meet the students needs is fantastic.
Recommendation
It is recommended that the unit coordinator continue to have students submit their placement location preferences and source placements as able within these areas.

Feedback
Some students struggled with some neurological physiotherapy clinical skills, particularly dynamic balance and gait re-education.
Recommendation
It is recommended that a review of the neurological units (PSIO12004 Neurological Physiotherapy 1 and PSIO13001 Neurological Physiotherapy 2) be completed.

Unit learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, you will be able to:

  1. Demonstrate consistent adherence to the rules of professional conduct, including legal and ethical responsibilities, and take responsibility for the personal development as an autonomous physiotherapist.
  2. Communicate effectively and efficiently with service users and the multi-disciplinary team in all aspects of clinical practice.
  3. Identify and analyse key clinical problems by planning and leading complete assessments, including patient interview and physical examination.
  4. Plan and perform safe and appropriate physiotherapy programmes for a variety of service users, including establishing short and long term goals.
  5. Demonstrate competency at an entry level standard of practice in clinical reasoning, execution of techniques, and delivery of programs to manage specifc clinical problems.
  6. Critically reflect upon clinical development and relate this to revelant published sources and practice based experience.
