PSYC11010 - Fundamentals of Psychology

General Information

Unit Synopsis

This unit introduces you to the fundamental principles of human behaviour and their application to everyday life and work. Accordingly, topics will range from an overview and history of psychology to areas such as applying psychology to health and social environments. Please note, for students intending to complete a psychology major (CC43 or CF59), this unit cannot be used as a substitute for any part of the core APAC accredited sequence. However, it can be used as one of your non-psychology elective units.

Important note: Students enrolled in a subsequent unit who failed their pre-requisite unit, should drop the subsequent unit before the census date or within 10 working days of Fail grade notification. Students who do not drop the unit in this timeframe cannot later drop the unit without academic and financial liability. Attendance Requirements

All on-campus students are expected to attend scheduled classes – in some units, these classes are identified as a mandatory (pass/fail) component and attendance is compulsory. International students, on a student visa, must maintain a full time study load and meet both attendance and academic progress requirements in each study period (satisfactory attendance for International students is defined as maintaining at least an 80% attendance record).

Each 6-credit Undergraduate unit at CQUniversity requires an overall time commitment of an average of 12.5 hours of study per week, making a total of 150 hours for the unit.

This is a graded unit: your overall grade will be calculated from the marks or grades for each assessment task, based on the relative weightings shown in the table above. You must obtain an overall mark for the unit of at least 50%, or an overall grade of ‘pass’ in order to pass the unit. If any ‘pass/fail’ tasks are shown in the table above they must also be completed successfully (‘pass’ grade). You must also meet any minimum mark requirements specified for a particular assessment task, as detailed in the ‘assessment task’ section (note that in some instances, the minimum mark for a task may be greater than 50%).

Feedback, Recommendations and Responses

Every unit is reviewed for enhancement each year. At the most recent review, the following staff and student feedback items were identified and recommendations were made.

Feedback
Students suggested the textbook be updated as some of the information was outdated (e.g., reference to DSM-IV, rather than DSM-5). Also, corresponding online resources weren't easily available to students with the current textbook.
Recommendation
Select a more recently published textbook for the required reading with available corresponding online activities and resources.
Action Taken
Rather than selecting a new introductory textbook, the Unit Coordinator decided to provide relevant weekly readings from a range of textbooks through the Course Resources Online service, which was well-received by students.

Students appreciated the weekly activities that helped keep them engaged with the unit and consolidate their learning.
Recommendation
Continue to provide weekly activities, such as the Stop and Review questions (Assessment 1), and the fill in the blank questions that correspond to the required reading, on the unit Moodle website.

Feedback
Students requested that additional support be provided regarding the use of optional software for developing the Concept Map in Assessment 2.
Recommendation
Include a recorded video demonstration of how to use the CMap software to create a concept map on the unit Moodle website.
Action Taken
Additional resources outlining how to use the CMap software to create a concept map were provided in Moodle and discussed within a lecture.

Feedback
Assessment 2 requires students to complete a concept map. Students reported finding this assessment challenging initially, as it is a different format compared to written assessments. However, student feedback acknowledge that the concept map task allows them to build on their knowledge and make links from the content to the real-world applications.
Recommendation
Continue to provide the concept map assessment task, as it is valuable for learning. Additional support should be provided earlier in the term to further explain the assessment task and provide examples of how to construct a concept map.
