PSYC11011 - Current Trends in Psychology

General Information

Unit Synopsis

This is an introductory course designed to provide students with up-to-date knowledge of the latest trends in both research and careers in psychology and the social sciences. It is a vehicle for the presentation of practical information about opportunities in Psychology and an opportunity to hear visiting speakers talk about their own careers and or research. The course aims to educate students pursuing a career in psychology and the social sciences about the various career paths available with the aim of assisting them in making informed decisions about their career options and study plan across their course of enrolment. Students will also have an opportunity to learn about research from an applied perspective through participation in current research projects.

Attendance Requirements

All on-campus students are expected to attend scheduled classes – in some units, these classes are identified as a mandatory (pass/fail) component and attendance is compulsory. International students, on a student visa, must maintain a full time study load and meet both attendance and academic progress requirements in each study period (satisfactory attendance for International students is defined as maintaining at least an 80% attendance record).

Each 6-credit Undergraduate unit at CQUniversity requires an overall time commitment of an average of 12.5 hours of study per week, making a total of 150 hours for the unit.

This is a graded unit: your overall grade will be calculated from the marks or grades for each assessment task, based on the relative weightings shown in the table above. You must obtain an overall mark for the unit of at least 50%, or an overall grade of ‘pass’ in order to pass the unit. If any ‘pass/fail’ tasks are shown in the table above they must also be completed successfully (‘pass’ grade). You must also meet any minimum mark requirements specified for a particular assessment task, as detailed in the ‘assessment task’ section (note that in some instances, the minimum mark for a task may be greater than 50%).

The iChange module was too easy and the percentage grade should be reduced
Recommendation
Consider changes to the grading of this assessment.
Action Taken
iChange module is no longer assessed in the unit. However, it remains in the unit as a required activity along with the topic on social innovation.

The instructions for Assessment 4 on the Unit Profile were too detailed.
Recommendation
Simplify the Assessment 4 instructions.

This is no longer relevant as assessment items and instructions/guides in 2020 have been changed.

Return the essay feedback (Assessment 4) before exam week.
Recommendation
Given the time needed to give feedback on more than 200 essays, it is recommended to move this assessment deadline forward substantially to facilitate timely return to students. Consideration of the practicality of this will be given for the next iteration.
Action Taken
The essay remains in the 2020 unit as the major assessment, and is due on Monday of week 12. Feedback given within 2 weeks. There is an associated assessment (the annotated bibliography) which is due in week 5. A week 12 deadline allows time for students to get feedback and then apply it before submitting their essay.

Unit Coordinator to consider practicality of re-numbering assignments to reflect order of submission.

The textbook was not well utilised in the unit.
Recommendation
A textbook will no longer be required for this unit. All resources and required readings will be provided within Moodle.

Recommendation
In addition to being covered in the lecture, a short video will be created for each essay topic that will provide specific detail and advice in relation to the theory or approach.

More clarity needed around the requirements for the annotated bibliography
Recommendation
A marking rubric for the annotated bibliography will be created and given to students, as will resources developed to provide further instruction and advice for completing the assessment (such as exemplars and frequently asked questions).
