PSYC12012 - Physiological Psychology

General Information

Unit Synopsis

The course introduces students to current knowledge about neurophysiological and neuroanatomical aspects of central nervous system structure and functioning. This knowledge is then applied for the purpose of understanding human behaviour through the study of neurons and neural networks, neuroanatomy, the visual and auditory sensory systems, motor activity and sleep. Methods of studying the central nervous system are also discussed. It is a requirement of enrolment in the course that students have access to the CQU World Wide Web site via the Internet.

Attendance Requirements

All on-campus students are expected to attend scheduled classes – in some units, these classes are identified as a mandatory (pass/fail) component and attendance is compulsory. International students, on a student visa, must maintain a full time study load and meet both attendance and academic progress requirements in each study period (satisfactory attendance for International students is defined as maintaining at least an 80% attendance record).

Each 6-credit Undergraduate unit at CQUniversity requires an overall time commitment of an average of 12.5 hours of study per week, making a total of 150 hours for the unit.

This is a graded unit: your overall grade will be calculated from the marks or grades for each assessment task, based on the relative weightings shown in the table above. You must obtain an overall mark for the unit of at least 50%, or an overall grade of ‘pass’ in order to pass the unit. If any ‘pass/fail’ tasks are shown in the table above they must also be completed successfully (‘pass’ grade). You must also meet any minimum mark requirements specified for a particular assessment task, as detailed in the ‘assessment task’ section (note that in some instances, the minimum mark for a task may be greater than 50%).

Feedback, Recommendations and Responses

Every unit is reviewed for enhancement each year. At the most recent review, the following staff and student feedback items were identified and recommendations were made.

Feedback
The quiz 2 part A could be brought forward in the term. Students would rather do this part of the quiz directly after the content has been covered. This would also help distribute the load of assessment for the students
Recommendation
The opening of the Quizzes will be changed to ensure better alignment between timing of content delivery and assessment. Quiz 2 part A should be opened after the content it assesses has been taught. Quiz 2 part B should remain as is.
Action Taken
After consideration, Quiz Part 2 was left as-is, occurring in Week 12. Given there are already four separate assessment points (two quizzes, assignment and exam), increasing this to five would have increased the load on students. Further, it is desirable that students should retain and apply material, even if covered earlier in the unit.

Feedback
The downloadable lecture slides did not incorporate detailed notes, which would have been useful for revision.
Recommendation
Students should be encouraged to make their own notes when viewing lecturers to cement their learning. Time should be allocated in tutorials for discussion of key lecture points to guide student learning.

The workshops sometimes devolved into a Q&A session as the class worked through the worksheet.

Additional activities, including critical class discussion of the key issues raised in each week's content, should be incorporated into tutorials.

Most students appreciated the full work week allowed for the take-home test. Other students would have preferred that it spanned the weekend to accommodate work commitments.

Unit learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, you will be able to:

  1. Know and describe the connection between behaviour in general and the thinking mind in specific and neurophysiological activities.
  2. Know and describe the gross anatomy and functioning of the nervous system.
  3. Explain how the application of psychophysiological findings assists the understanding of a number of phenomena including perception, emotions, sleep, reproductive behaviour, language, learning and memory.
  4. Understand and discuss the chemical and biological basis of maladaptive behaviour.
  5. Understand and describe the applications of modern techniques in psychophysiology.
  6. Understand the principles of ethics in animal research.
  7. Understand the procedures to design and conduct a psychophysiological experiment, analyse the data, and report the results of the experiment.
