PSYC13017 - Abnormal Psychology

General Information

Unit Synopsis

The objectives of this course are the following: (1) to introduce students to the foundations of abnormal psychology; (2) provide an overview of the major features of abnormal psychology (diagnosis, etiology, assessment, treatment, research, theory); (3) assist student to begin to integrate theory, research and practice considerations within areas of abnormal psychology. It is a requirement of enrolment in the course that students have access to the CQU website as well as email access.

Minimum of 30 Units in Level 2 Psych Courses for CU77, 24 Units for CA10, CQ27 & CF59.

Important note: Students enrolled in a subsequent unit who failed their pre-requisite unit, should drop the subsequent unit before the census date or within 10 working days of Fail grade notification. Students who do not drop the unit in this timeframe cannot later drop the unit without academic and financial liability. Attendance Requirements

All on-campus students are expected to attend scheduled classes – in some units, these classes are identified as a mandatory (pass/fail) component and attendance is compulsory. International students, on a student visa, must maintain a full time study load and meet both attendance and academic progress requirements in each study period (satisfactory attendance for International students is defined as maintaining at least an 80% attendance record).

Recommended Student Time Commitment

Each 6-credit Undergraduate unit at CQUniversity requires an overall time commitment of an average of 12.5 hours of study per week, making a total of 150 hours for the unit.

This is a graded unit: your overall grade will be calculated from the marks or grades for each assessment task, based on the relative weightings shown in the table above. You must obtain an overall mark for the unit of at least 50%, or an overall grade of ‘pass’ in order to pass the unit. If any ‘pass/fail’ tasks are shown in the table above they must also be completed successfully (‘pass’ grade). You must also meet any minimum mark requirements specified for a particular assessment task, as detailed in the ‘assessment task’ section (note that in some instances, the minimum mark for a task may be greater than 50%).

Clearer guidelines were requested by some students on the video assessment.
Recommendation
Provide specific guidelines on the amount of time allocated to each component of the video recording and provide more guidance on the content required.

An exemplar of the video presentation was provided to students with discussion around requirements and amount of time allocated to sections of the video recording.

Some students stated that they found material in the lectures and tutorials "triggering."
Recommendation
Routinely provide warnings to students at the beginning of lectures and tutorials that the content being discussed may trigger emotional reactions or distress for some students.

Some found family commitments impacted on live attendance for lectures and tutorials that were scheduled late in the day.
Recommendation
Consider diversity in student schedules, particularly those with family commitments, when making timetable requests. Remind students who are unable to attend live classes that they can engage in content through class recordings and forums.

Unit learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, you will be able to:

  1. have a functional knowledge of the foundations of abnormal psychology as measured by assessment and formal examination
  2. provide both functional and critical knowledge of major facets of abnormal psychology as evidenced in the assignments and examination for the course. This will require the examination of the validity of the arguments and research surrounding diagnostic categories and related issues through the use of a range of peer reviewed materials, and communicating this information using a scholarly style of exposition. It will also require factual knowledge
  3. integrate logically theory, research and practice within a scholarly position paper, in the on-line discussion forum, and in responses to examination questions. The ability to disseminate knowledge and engage in debate concerning scientific information necessitates evaluation of one's performance and development and starts with the recognition of the need to acquire knowledge
  4. reflect a commitment to a scientist-practitioner philosophy. The ability to reflect a commitment to evidence-based practice as well as to practice informing research will be emphasised in taught and assessed work
