Unit Synopsis

In this unit you will focus on the professional ethics and standards that must be met as a registered psychologist. This unit will examine requirements for initial, and ongoing registration, and legal aspects of psychological practice and research. Opportunities for critical analysis, ethical decision making, and preliminary preparation for your internship will be provided.

Students must be enrolled in the Master of Professional Psychology

Important note: Students enrolled in a subsequent unit who failed their pre-requisite unit, should drop the subsequent unit before the census date or within 10 working days of Fail grade notification. Students who do not drop the unit in this timeframe cannot later drop the unit without academic and financial liability. Attendance Requirements

All on-campus students are expected to attend scheduled classes – in some units, these classes are identified as a mandatory (pass/fail) component and attendance is compulsory. International students, on a student visa, must maintain a full time study load and meet both attendance and academic progress requirements in each study period (satisfactory attendance for International students is defined as maintaining at least an 80% attendance record).

This is a graded unit: your overall grade will be calculated from the marks or grades for each assessment task, based on the relative weightings shown in the table above. You must obtain an overall mark for the unit of at least 50%, or an overall grade of ‘pass’ in order to pass the unit. If any ‘pass/fail’ tasks are shown in the table above they must also be completed successfully (‘pass’ grade). You must also meet any minimum mark requirements specified for a particular assessment task, as detailed in the ‘assessment task’ section (note that in some instances, the minimum mark for a task may be greater than 50%).

Completing the internship plan was challenging but very productive; This unit encouraged us to explore our options in the +1 pathway toward being a psychologist - provided me with a firm understanding.
Recommendation
Continue to include completion of an Internship plan as an assessment item.
Action Taken
The internship plan was retained as an assessment as it prepares each student to complete the internship plan for approval by the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA).

Reduce the amount of pre-reading.
Recommendation
Ensure students are aware of the difference between pre-reading material they need to ready fully and have a solid understanding of and that which is to build awareness and could be skimmed or saved for later.

The Unit Coordinator provided clearer instructions about the difference between the required readings and the recommended readings.

Recommendation
If the current format of the unit is maintained the online test will be held in week 8 prior to the shift in unit focus.

Lectures regarding the Rapid Critical Review seemed to be rushed and out of order.
Recommendation
Discussion regarding structure of this unit will be reviewed by the Master of Professional Psychology teaching team.
Action Taken
Lectures for the Rapid Critical Review were changed to a flipped classroom model, delivered as a tutorial. Students appreciated the co-operative teaching, addressing all students' questions in these lectures.

Students appreciate working through real ethical dilemma in a class environment. Several students commented that they enjoyed the variety of solutions or views on ethical dilemmas common in the psychological field
Recommendation
Lectures will continue to include "real life" ethical dilemmas as they occur in the field of psychology.

Students enjoyed the focus of the Rapid Critical Review (assessment 3) on clinical work and practical applications in the field. Positive comments focused on the collaborative tutorial style of lectures surrounding the Rapid Critical Review.

The lectures regarding the Rapid Critical Review will continue to focus on practical applications and be delivered as a collaborative tutorial, working through students' questions in the online class room.
