Unit Synopsis

This unit is part of the sequence of units that culminates in the degree of Master in Clinical Psychology. This unit is intended to provide basic knowledge in assessment research, theory and practice necessary for working as a Clinical Psychologist.

Attendance Requirements

All on-campus students are expected to attend scheduled classes – in some units, these classes are identified as a mandatory (pass/fail) component and attendance is compulsory. International students, on a student visa, must maintain a full time study load and meet both attendance and academic progress requirements in each study period (satisfactory attendance for International students is defined as maintaining at least an 80% attendance record).

Recommended Student Time Commitment

Each 6-credit Postgraduate unit at CQUniversity requires an overall time commitment of an average of 12.5 hours of study per week, making a total of 150 hours for the unit.

This is a graded unit: your overall grade will be calculated from the marks or grades for each assessment task, based on the relative weightings shown in the table above. You must obtain an overall mark for the unit of at least 50%, or an overall grade of ‘pass’ in order to pass the unit. If any ‘pass/fail’ tasks are shown in the table above they must also be completed successfully (‘pass’ grade). You must also meet any minimum mark requirements specified for a particular assessment task, as detailed in the ‘assessment task’ section (note that in some instances, the minimum mark for a task may be greater than 50%).

Every unit is reviewed for enhancement each year. At the most recent review, the following staff and student feedback items were identified and recommendations were made.

Feedback
Create more case-based learning experiences (e.g., interpretation and write-up) across the various standardised tests taught in the unit.
Recommendation
Create case studies based from de-identified data from the CQUniversity Wellness Centre.
Action Taken
Students worked with case studies from the Wellness Centre to learn the relevant psychological assessments and modes of interpretation. Additionally, case studies from other units were utilised to provide students with more learning moments throughout the term.

Feedback
Break teaching up to allow for practical demonstration.
Recommendation
Create pre-recorded material for lecture content for students to view at any stage.
Action Taken
Video materials of administration of psychometric assessments were uploaded to Moodle, including videos with common errors for students to analyse.

A number of students felt the marking criteria were confusing and could be improved.
Recommendation
The marking criteria and marking rubrics will be revised and updated by the unit coordinator.

Feedback
The dates for one assessment needed to be adjusted, as a result of issues with students' access to Q-Interactive software, which caused stress for students.
Recommendation
The Unit Coordinator and the Head of Course for the Master of Professional Psychology will start the process for students' access to Q-Interactive after their acceptance into the program (both MPP and MCP). This will facilitate students getting access to the software so that they can complete their assessment by the due date.

Unit learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, you will be able to:

  1. Describe the theoretical, research and practice-based processes underpinning psychological assessment and its techniques.
  2. Explain and demonstrate test selection, administration, interpretation, write-up of psychological testing and its findings.
  3. Demonstrate proficient administration of a clinical interview and selected psychological assessment procedures, including the Wechsler intelligence test and a standardised personality/emotional and behavioural inventory.
  4. Demonstrate observational, mental status examination and functional assessment knowledge and skills.
  5. Demonstrate understanding and use of the major diagnostic classification systems in psychological assessment.
  6. Demonstrate the ability to put together assessment information in formulations and translate them to evidence-informed, client-friendly recommendations.
  7. Demonstrate the ability to write informed, succinct, valid and well-organised reports that include formulations and both normative and ipsative recommendations.
  8. Demonstrate the ability to write a psychological report and then provide therapeutic feedback to clients about findings.
  9. Demonstrate understanding and the ability to reflect on practice as a way of informing and improving as a learner and as a clinical psychologist.
