SAFE20019 - Evidence-Informed OHS Practice

General Information

Unit Synopsis

This unit provides you with the opportunity to consolidate and practically apply all of the knowledge, skills and attitudes developed during your learning journey in the course, particularly with regard to human factors, occupational health and hygiene, safety science, and risk management. The unit also develops theoretical and methodological knowledge to allow you to evaluate the evidence that will inform your professional practice. There is a specific emphasis on developing higher order skills and understanding which are representative of the holistic application of core skills that occurs when a professional understands the interaction between disciplinary domains in solving complex problems.

Co-requisite: SAFE20011 Exposures and Health Risk, SAFE20017 Human Factors in Complex Systems

Important note: Students enrolled in a subsequent unit who failed their pre-requisite unit, should drop the subsequent unit before the census date or within 10 working days of Fail grade notification. Students who do not drop the unit in this timeframe cannot later drop the unit without academic and financial liability. Attendance Requirements

All on-campus students are expected to attend scheduled classes – in some units, these classes are identified as a mandatory (pass/fail) component and attendance is compulsory. International students, on a student visa, must maintain a full time study load and meet both attendance and academic progress requirements in each study period (satisfactory attendance for International students is defined as maintaining at least an 80% attendance record).

Each 6-credit Postgraduate unit at CQUniversity requires an overall time commitment of an average of 12.5 hours of study per week, making a total of 150 hours for the unit.

This is a graded unit: your overall grade will be calculated from the marks or grades for each assessment task, based on the relative weightings shown in the table above. You must obtain an overall mark for the unit of at least 50%, or an overall grade of ‘pass’ in order to pass the unit. If any ‘pass/fail’ tasks are shown in the table above they must also be completed successfully (‘pass’ grade). You must also meet any minimum mark requirements specified for a particular assessment task, as detailed in the ‘assessment task’ section (note that in some instances, the minimum mark for a task may be greater than 50%).

'Clear guidance for expectations in the marking criteria would add value to this section of the course'
Recommendation
It is recommended to conduct a review of the explanations provided within the assessment tasks and the associated marking rubrics to ensure clarity and consistency of each assessment task.
Action Taken
Assessment tasks and rubrics were reviewed and compared for clarity and consistency prior to the commencement of term. These were also covered in each of the 3 weeks/sessions dedicated to the 3 assessment tasks, and also in each of the 3 review weeks following the residential.

Clearer instructions in regards to the use of templates to complete assessment tasks has been requested (i.e. accompanying instructions as to their use/completion).

The provision of templates will be accompanied by instructions as to their completion in the next term this unit is offered.

The volume of supporting resources and readings provided in revision materials for the Occupational Hygiene and Human Factors topics for use in the assessment tasks has been has been noted as excessive and unnecessary.
Recommendation
Additional resources that are not essential to the completion of specific assessment tasks will be identified as optional additional resource/readings, or will be removed from Moodle.
