SPCH13005 - Linguistics and Phonetics 2

General Information

Unit Synopsis

This course will focus on acoustic phonetics, syntactic analysis of English and phonetic transcription of connected speech. Students will learn to understand normal grammatical patterns and how people speak on a day to day basis and be able to describe and analyse this in order to understand the differences found in people with communication disorders and those from culturally and linguistically diverse communities. An understanding of the relationship of vocal tract shape and gestures to the sounds produced is essential in the assessment, diagnosis and treatment of speech disorders. An understanding of the basic units and patterning of English grammar will also assist students in working with both oral and written language in educational and culturally and linguistically diverse settings.

Attendance Requirements

All on-campus students are expected to attend scheduled classes – in some units, these classes are identified as a mandatory (pass/fail) component and attendance is compulsory. International students, on a student visa, must maintain a full time study load and meet both attendance and academic progress requirements in each study period (satisfactory attendance for International students is defined as maintaining at least an 80% attendance record).

Each 6-credit Undergraduate unit at CQUniversity requires an overall time commitment of an average of 12.5 hours of study per week, making a total of 150 hours for the unit.

This is a graded unit: your overall grade will be calculated from the marks or grades for each assessment task, based on the relative weightings shown in the table above. You must obtain an overall mark for the unit of at least 50%, or an overall grade of ‘pass’ in order to pass the unit. If any ‘pass/fail’ tasks are shown in the table above they must also be completed successfully (‘pass’ grade). You must also meet any minimum mark requirements specified for a particular assessment task, as detailed in the ‘assessment task’ section (note that in some instances, the minimum mark for a task may be greater than 50%).

Students performed disproportionately on the acoustics and phonetics sections of the assessment tasks.
Recommendation
The two lecturers will discuss the performance differences between the two content areas and consider strategies to ensure more equitable results.
Action Taken
The lecturers changed the structure of the acoustics content of the unit such that it was taught in one block as opposed to distributed across the term. This resulted in more evenly distributed grades across the phonetics and acoustic content.

Unit learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, you will be able to:

  1. Analyse simple and complex English sentences using basic syntactic analysis skills.
  2. Transcribe Australian English connected speech as it is spoken, using both the appropriate International Phonetic Association symbols and Australian vowel symbols.
  3. Describe how speech sounds are produced utilising both acoustic analysis techniques and anatomical knowledge of the shape and formation of the vocal tract.
  4. Identify and analyse examples of language use with regard to encoding meaning and processing language within the brain.

Achieving the above learning outcomes is essential to meeting Range of Practice standards for entry level speech pathologists in the criteria of language and speech. Competency in linguistic analysis of speech and language samples is necessary to meet range of practice standards for speech and language for both paediatric and adult clients, including those from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds. The Competency-based Occupational Standards met in this course include Unit 1 Assessment, Unit 2 Analysis and Interpretation and Unit 3 Planning Evidence Based Speech Pathology Practice.
