This course will focus on assessment, description, diagnosis, treatment and holistic client-centred management of clients presenting with acquired disorders of language (i.e. aphasia) and cognitive-communication associated with neurological conditions such as stroke, traumatic brain injury and dementia. This will be achieved by introducing students to cognitive-neuropsychological models of language and cognitive processing and using these as frameworks to understand how language is produced in healthy adult speakers and subsequently how language function may be disrupted following neurological injury. Students will also become familiar with impairment-based, social-based, and environmentally-based approaches to management of such clients and will develop knowledge and skills that allow drawing from different approaches in order to effectively provide speech pathology management within the context of the ICF.
